Hi Bunny, one trouble with MG is that once germinated they grow like mad, so you'll need some support in place fairly soon. The main problem is that they just dont like cold night temperatures. So unless you've plenty of space- conservatory/heated greenhouse- they'll start to go yellow, sulk & generally look miserable. IME it's just not worth the effort of trying them this early. Beginning of May is fine. They'll germinate in an unheated greenhouse then & do fine.
Problem I have is they are slug caviar. So I now grow them in pots, with copper tape around them, next to a trellis which they eventually scramble up fine. I still lose the odd one, but if I planted them actually in the border I'd end up with none. J.
My mum grew them last yr and I potted some on into a big pot . I'm slug fest here but had it on my deck and wernt slugged.... Obviously too far too trek
Someone maybe jean ? said better in ground un fed etc ...but now you have said about slugs ...back to pot again but won't feed
