That was a gross picture Geoff good job I'd had my brekkie.
We have had hummingbird moths in the garden in warmer summers, they really do look like hummingbirds. This is a photo of a moth I took june 2011, not sure what kind, as you can see it's rather grey in colour and seemed much bigger than the photo suggests. I'll have a look a the link and see if I can get an idea of what it was, unless any of you can tell me.
Not very clear pictures, but then it flew off before I could get a good look.
David, I've had elephant hawk moth caterpillars on several occasions but never seen the adults. One day, perhaps.
Kate, thanks for the seed offer and Muddy Fork thanks for the tip. I did try a cutting a few weeks ago but I read it's really the wrong time to take them and, sure enough, it went mouldy so I'll have to try again in the right season.
I have a love/hate relationship with ivy - I love to see it buzzing with bees but I hate the way it rampages around in places where I don't want it!
Thanks Gary, I'll google that name and have a look.
Just had coffee in the conservatory, temp 80F or 28c always sounds hotter in old money. mmmm Lovely
Have just googled and yes that's what it is, the picture on the website was more colourful than mine but it did have spots on it's wings.. managed to get back and edit before anyone else posted.
Actually no rain up here, but no real sun either- unlike in Nworcs apparently, just spoken to friend down there.
Some washing out, it may save a bit of tumbling time. Daughter got trashy 80s tv prog on & once she's gone out I shall be a speedy Mrs Mop before she gets back- much easier on my own.
Have gardening plans for tomorrow & w/end. Tough OH no grumbles please. J.
No rain so far today we even have sun shine. Took all my waterpfoofs when i went out and ended up feeling like a boil in the bag meal. Nice swim at hydro pool time for lunch then think i will have a nap as i hurt in places i didnt know i had. I found a lime green caterpiler last year one of the elephant hawk moths not sure which one . Beautiful photos have no idea how to get pics on here so i will just admire everyone elses.Bound to rain again window cleaner has just turned up
Morning. Bright here with the promise of more - and I spend Thurs. afternoons in the office for the dog rescue, just my luck.
Love the moths, agree with Gary that they're very neglected as a species. I think we do have some beautifully marked ones here but many are very tiny. Hawk moths, I think, can hold their own with many of the exotic ones.
Pam, I am waiting for my neighbour's Leycesteria to fruit so I can beg a few berries for seed. I cannot find the plant in the garden centres that I frequent and it was recommended to me as suitable for the chickens' free range area. It is a welcome splash of colour at this time.
Nola, you have probably already said this and I missed it - whereabouts in the country are you?
Flo - I have taken a pot of cuttings from my Leycesteria for you and put them in my greenhouse - keep your fingers crossed that a couple will root
Was about to say morning all but just realised its now afternoon! Am struggling with some difficult reports at the moment. There's still no coffee but I do have a few sachets of cappucino mix hidden in the drawer so all is not lost. Might have to pop to the supermarket at lunchtime though - and put in an expenses claim!
No rain here today either - cloudy with a few bits of blue.
Becks, how is the costume search going? My Dad made a fantastic Dougal from the Magic Roundabout costume out of lots of sisal when we were kids - my brother wore it and I was dressed as Florence! I think we won a prize.
Love the moth pictures. One freaked me out t'other week by flying around the bedroom when I had gone to bed. Being 'blind' without my spex I cant stand insects in there but managed to 'catch' it in a tumbler, kept for such situations, & released it out of bathroom window.
Have opened my bulb parcel- like a kid in a sweet shop! Some for the lawn extension, plus a covering pea netting re the squirrels, & others for pots, also netted, until I know whereabouts have space for them next Spring. J.
Found that a lycestra has seeded itself in a pot with a yucca. Both plants doing well so havent the heart to disturb them. No-one else has got one si thinking squirrels might have helped.

That's a smart moth.
Just looking through some identification pictures I'd guess that's an Eyed Hawk Moth.
