Chelsea Flower Show

  • I can't help feeling that the show gardens at Chelsea just don't relate to me as a gardener. I like Tatton, although it does get busy of course, but the show gardens again at Tatton feel a bit remote in my opinion.

I have a strong preference for Southport flower show; I know it's not RHS but it is a big show and the show gardens are intimate, lovely and very inspiring. You get to easily speak to the exhibitors and the flower pavilions are spectacular.

  • Perhaps it was time for a change but not,I would have thought in ATs 50th year. I missed his natural TV presence. Monty is not so slick. As for Chris Beardshaw.........

I have posted photos in a separate thread so you can at least see some of the plants and gardens for more than a second.   Haven't yet caught up on all the programmes but it does seem so far to be the same old constant repetition of items and surpeficial coverage of the plants used along with unknowledgeable celebrities whaffling.

For coverage of the best flower and garden show in the world, I rather expect both presenters and the production team to be highly qualified and good communicators.

Nikki is on it for people like me who don't understand the majority of Chelsea, but who are enthusiastic, but niave. I for one am I glad there's a 'normal' person on it. As for people commenting on her attractiveness, does it really matter? The notion presenters need to be attractive to matter is frankly irritating at the very least. Especially when it comes to women. As soon as a young woman as fat and old as Tom Kerridge is on primetime telly, I'll always have a bee in my bonnet about it.

"two fat ladies" was a wonderful series of cookery programmes SP3, and size has never been a hinderance to the lovely Dawn French or Lisa Tarbuck. But I do totally accept your point.

They are sadly characters of the past Hosta, as well as characters of comedy and amusement, and as far as I know TFL was with older ladies too. I'm condoning people being overweight, I am however condoning television producers that seem to only excuse a female presenter carrying extra tub once she hits a certain age. It's a shame because I'm sure there are many, many talented female presenters out there who don't get considered simply because they aren't slim or pretty enough... which is sad! And simply doesn't apply for men in television! Anyway, I think this is the wrong forum to air my feminist grievancesimage

This was all discussed at the time it was announced.   He was offered the spot as a share with Monty which is effectively a demotion for the most qualified and expeienced gardening presenter on TV.   AT understandably chose not to accept.

  • I wonder who they are pitching their presentation to. Perhaps there is too much coverage if they have to include novelty items such as " guest reviewers" and eye candy.
