tallish pond plant

After yellow flag irises took over my small pond I emptied it and replanted the pygmy waterlily I managed to untangle. Nothing else survived. The pond is small; 5ft x 2ft. The waterlily covers most of the surface but I would like something not too big to add height. Any ideas?

What about TYPHA MINIMA (Miniature Bullrush) ?

  • I have yellow variegated loosestrife - it is called Alexander, grows to 1-2ft and is nowhere near as aggressive as normal loosestrife.

    The foliage is quite pretty.

  • Is this available from garden centres or will I have to go to a specialist?

What depth will the plant be at? I think this might effect what you could try...

Soft rush and flowering rush don't take up too much room or can be confined by pot or bag.

I like to look at Naturescape's and Puddleplants websites for ideas and they also say what depth the plant prefers.

  • It would be in 8 inches at the most. Thanks so far for the suggestions.

I think the rushes will be okay at that depth. They grow around a metre high apparently although mine are barely 2ft.

I'm trying monkey flower and pickerel this year which can also be planted at that depth but I don't want to recommend them as such as I haven't seen the finished article yet.

Have a look at this site http://www.puddleplants.co.uk/home.php lots of choice and they're really helpful - highly recommended.

I have no relationship with Puddleplants other than as a customer.

There are some at Suttons here:

Also a search on Ebay, if you use it, will give results. The variegated yellow loosestrife look lovely in a pond with both foliage and flower interest all Summer.

You need a marginal plant, Lysimachia won't put up with 8inches of water. A nice damp soil at the edge and it will go like mad
