Chit and seed potatoes

AlastairSAlastairS Posts: 42

I have some Duke of York seed potatoes, but they have sprouted shoots. I have had them in the light in an eggbox to chit - the ends of the shoots(2 inches long) have chitted and the potatoes are soft.

What should I do ?

THanks, Alastair

    THank you.

  • Using the search facility I picked up this query from 9 years ago, which seems to have received no reply.
My query is related but not the same.  I have bought some Charlotte seed potatoes rather early, as I probably will not sow them until April.  They are just beginning to chit and I am wondering, if I can rub the shoots off and more shoots will grow to replace them so they are ready for sowing March/April?

I keep mine outside to chit and find that they are very slow in doing so if it is cold only chitting when it warms up so I would say if you want to delay them put them somewhere colder. When I say that I keep them outside they are undercover in a light and dry place away from vermin.

Low (but not freezing) temperatures and good light is what they need now.

I bought 2kg each of Prada and Charlotte on Tuesday in their net bags.  I decanted the Prada and arranged them with the eyes upward on a plastic tray.  I left the Charlotte in their net and placed them also on the tray.  I then placed the whole tray on a pallet on the garage floor.  Next morning the lot had disappeared.  Not a speck of spud or the net.  Does anyone have the number for Hercule Poirot?

  • I'm T2D and can't eat potatoes, so haven't grown any in years. I'm going to have a go this year though for other peoples plates. I read you can use normal supermarket ones (if they're the variety you want of course) and that you can chop them in half at least to double your purchase.

Begorrah, Mike, were you looking?  I'm in the process of giving the garage a thorough turning out, not related to my purloined spuds, so may discover the culprits.  I've since replaced my losses with supermarket ones in the hope that our flock of rooks won't sniff them out.  Plans afoot to plant them deep and protect them with 5-litre plastic bottles.

🤔 just a thought, but I don’t suppose someone could’ve found them, cooked them, and served them up for your supper … ?
