here in the west ,that is my husband who grows them by the score, waits till they are inch high and stand a good chance against slugs and snails and when the frost looks like it wont be back, they are pretty tough thou, mind they drink a lot of water, so don't plant near other veggie or flowers that need lots of water or walls.
I am in the north west I was given some sunflower seeds that was from 2011 all of germinated and after 3 weeks they are about an inch high I have them in long pots outside under a home built little green house made from fish tank glass I will plant out around may which I was recommended to do
It's my first time growing the Titan Sunflower variety, I cant wait. They have started to germinate in the greenhouse. My daughter (7 years old) wants to watch them every day now and she says its daddy and daughters garden
Just a tip I got from someone. Get some florist wire and wrap round stems to keep them straight. Last year mine was crooked but my friends flowers were great. Do im ready with the wire.

After the frost risk has gone, probably mid may in Sussex, unless you can give them protection
I was going to ask about sowing mine, haven't done so yet and was wondering whether they would be ok in the GH (unheated) now?
I have sowed mine today, may sow some more next week, they grow so quickly and you cant put them out till mid to end of may.
I have brought mine indoors just until they come up, its very cold at night here in my unheated grernhouse.
I learned this lesson after last years early sowings, 2' tall in pots and trying to house them somewhere!.
I sowed mine 3 weeks ago and they've all shooted in my unheated GH.
