Magnolia never flowers
I have a magnolia grandiflora( i think it is grandiflora, big green shiny leaves) which was given to me in a pot about 12 years ago. It was moved into the ground 10 years ago, but it has never flowered. It is in a south facing garden , we are in midlands. Can anyone help, would love to see it flower

D'you know what your soil is like?
I read that you plant a magnolia for your grandchildren, but would be interested to find out how to get one to flower. I got one free with an order of plants about three years ago. It is in a bucket because I don't know where to put it. It began life as a glorified stick, but has put some growth on. One branch is a bit low down and I don't know whether or when to lop it off for a better shape. I doubt I will ever see it flower, but would love to know if there is anything I can do to bring it forward.
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/Profile.aspx?pid=599 has useful info. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for troubleshooting. Basically it prefers a warm sunny site. A 12 year old plant should now be several metres tall. How big is yours?
we have , i think, slightly alkaline soil, quite clay, the tree is about 2 metres tall and the same wide. it sometimes has a few brown leaves in spring but always put that down to frost? Would love it to flower so any advice would be great.
A grandiflora will not flower at 2m tall. My grandiflora Exmouth is 25 year old and has been flowering sporadically through the last ten summers. It is as tall as the house and the flowers can be seen from the upstairs bedroom window.keep the surface roots well mulched with well rotted compost or farm yard manure.
A much better magnolia for a small garden is M. Soulangeana . Try the garden centres. They will have them in big tubs already in flower. My soulangeana has flowered regularly from about three year old.
I have a new Magnolia soulangiana, only been in 3 or 4 years it's only 3ft high and was very small when it went in and is flowering already. I've never heard of planting a Magnolia for your grandchildren.
I didnt plant for my grandchildren, my first one is only due this august! There is obviously a problem with soil or something else which is why it wont flower, so no the question is how do i find out what!
Thank you for that, does anybody have any ideas, short of moving it, or into a very large pot, it was a present so the person who bought it obviously didnt know what they were doing
What species do you have?
