any ideas on the first unidentified weed? by the way, i forgot to take a photo at the time but another one i pulled up looked like a bit like lavender in its leaves, but very green, no flowers. no idea what that was either but maybe someone might know from my vague description ...?

The first one looks a bit like a heather. Not many plants are in flower this early in the year...

Was the first weed one of many or just the one. If there's more of it on the bits you haven't done yet, a photo of it growing might help.

hi, there were about 3/4 small pieces of it- all small that size. ill see if i can get a photo in the morning, it will be dark by the time i get back tonight.

  • Fab read. Glad you seem to be winning the battle .

I must admit I've had a similar battle with an inherited allotment plot whose previous invaders just sat on their laurels and let the weeds rule. Back and hands sore, but progress has been good.

Ok, then we can have another try, something to give scale as well, your finger maybe  but not over the lensimage

    UPDATE:

the battlefield has been cleared of casualties ...

all that remains is 2 mountains ...

now i have got to a point where i dont know what to do next. i have dug the soil to about a foot deep, not so deep around the stumps as the roots were in the way - ive dug the weeds up and got rid of much root system as possible. for the rest of the roots, predominantly stump roots, ive left them sticking out the ground or on the surface to be baked by the sun.

ive turned the soil over and loosened it up. lots of root still remains, dug up but just in and amongst - suppose i should rake it? but theres lots of it.

my question is ... what next? the idea is to prepare this whole area for planting, i assume the dug up roots are ok to leave to rot down over time, just get rid of the overly big pieces?

is it wise to put some manure on it? the soil type is sandy/loamy, but ive not tested the pH as of yet.
