Is out there anyone know the name of the carrot seed that the farmers use  to overwinter with the use of f lease and where possible to obtain such seed

My brother is one of those farmers - there are many different maincrop carrot varieties grown commercially, depending on the requirements of the supermarkets with whom the farmer has a contract.

One of the most commonly grown commercial maincrop carrot varieties is Imperator.

I'm not sure if it's available on the open market - it may only be available to commercial growers in bulk quantities. image

Not sure I'd grow a carrot variety grown commercially, they favour storage and transport qualitites, not flavour. I've yet to buy a carrot that was worth eating. My carrots become flaccid after a couple of days, whereas bought ones are firm for weeks. image

I need a carrot that can be over wintered with some fleece protection and as I'm away for the winter  when I return home  I can with in a week or so pull carrots  which will be equally as good as any obtained  from Waitrose or sainsbury and farmers markets   Any carrot grown where I live will have a better taste  then some grown elsewhere such as in Essex or Scotland and as I've said before my garden is so small I need the space so as to start a new season of seed sowing  ie Earley Nantes Swift potatoes will be planted 25th Feb  I shall be disappointed if cannot have new potatoes after 6/7 weeks  still enough time for a second planting  New potatoes for Easter Sunday lunch being grown in greenhouse while I'm sunning myself here in Egypt cannot get any better
