Jim I don't grow commercially although I probably have 40+ crowns and will divide another bed next winter.

Will give away some of these to friends and neighbours or anyone who wants them.

As for the crop i will make 20 to 30 pots of jam and will nag OH to make crumble and tarts, will freeze some to over winter, still have some from last year. Will give lots away and still not overwork the plants.

One of the girls in the office at work killed her two crowns in 2012 by over cropping so I will give her replacements.

I could never grow just enough of anything. Gardening is my only real vice, I think!

As for small growing points I mean anything that looks too small to survive in the ground or could easly get over crowded by hardier crowns, The two small pots are 6 inch and the big on e is 11 inch, so you can see how small the plants are. They will come good in a few years. I've lots of room for them to remain unproductive where others may not have the space. I try to give every plant I own every chance of survival.

No expert thanks for that. Mine was not saveable then. image seems like a daft question but strange things happen in the plant world. image

Hi Perki, well I accidentally broke off a stalk and it was delicious. I cooked it in a small metal measuring cup. image

A bit of gerden produce is often appreciated more the n a box of sweets or a bottle of wine. Also it ia more personal gift.

Rhubarb has grown in my garden for the last 59 years.  Don't know what kind it is, just smother it in garden manure at the end of each season and we eat it with custard, in a pie and when we were children.............. We used to get a wee thin sweet stalk and a wee poke of sugar to dip it in.  Then we discovered chocolate bars.......  The folks next door leave theirs to its own devices and it grows for Britain

Ooh not had a Rhubarb pie in years and years. Now I want to make one. I always go for crumble because it's easy, but now I want to make a pie. Mmm.

  • last year we grew rhubarb, it was fantastic. So easy to maintane and it grew so big, we gave most of it away. Love it

  • Love this rhubarb thread.  I just found a new plant coming up.  We got a second plot at the allotment and lots of surprises coming up.  Almost dug over now as previous tenants let it go a bit last year.  I don't know what sort they are, but looking forward to pulling it.  Am forcing one lot of Rhubarb at the mo.  Must check it and see how it's doing.
