Stacey do you save your own seeds or do you always buy them?

  • I grow 'Prarie Fire', a small window ledge chilli that is very hot. I have got dozens off each plant in previous years and I pick and freeze them whole, without any preparation.

They freeze really well and are easy to chop from frozen.

I have just pricked out 3 seedlings, which were grown in a heated propagator, into 9cm pots for growing on. I will plant them into larger pots finally (about 9") and keep them on a south facing windowledge.

  • Hello all...

hello Stacy... I posted a thread earlier and got directed here to speak to you... HOPEFULLY you can push me in the right direction!!

I'm currently living in Cyprus, I moved here the beginning of last year. I planted scotch bonnets and cayennes around march/april last year, from seed and didnt do too badly, although my first time growing!

I've recently (3-4 weeks ago) planted more seeds (scotch bonnets, jalapeno, cayenne, trinidad scorpion and chocolate bhuts) into a small propagator. The daytime temp is topping at 21c and the night time dropping to 11-13c, i put a small light over the propagator to generate some heat as I cant get a heat mat over here and its a BIG pain to get them shipped... but I've had no luck what soever so far, not even a peeping sprout from the jalapenos!

Am I just being impatient or am I doing something wrong?

  • Evening all... Lancashire lass prarie fire is a fab fab chilli especially when the fruits ripen at differant times...

jim I always save my seeds  I harvest so many chillis I have a dehydrator to dry them all and I save te seeds. And like I have said always soak in cold black tea Prior to germination...

jim  the seeds you have planted need a constant 25• + I am not familiar with the Trinidad scorpion but I would assume it would need the same. The bhuts in my experience in the uk need 28 • to germinate. All of the chillis you are growing come from hot climates so I would suggest germinating at 28• for all of them. Have you tried putting them in a plastic bag? ( clear) chillis will do well once true leaves have appeared at  10•+ ( I just harvested some off wilted plants last week!) I can only assume that the temperatures are not consistent enough. Can you get a heated propogator?  Or move tem inside onto a sunny window ledge? I put all my seedlings into freezer bags and seal the bag and it seems to work a treat!!! Hope this helps a little I will rack my brains to help a little more after a cup of tea lol

  • haha they didnt even know what a propagator was then I asked in my local flower shop!! I stumbled across 1 in a newly opened store! Its just a bog standard plastic thing, nothing special at all, where the country is generally very hot they just count on the sun for the growth of plants, but chillies aint on their list of plants, they sell 1 type of chilli, i dont even know what it is... i'll definitely try the plastic bag trick, just stick the propagator into the bag i'm assuming? I haven't got any window ledges on the inside of my apartment which is a pain!

  • lol oh dear! do you have them in pots in the propogator? If so the. Put the individual pots in clear bags but there is no reason why you couldn't put the whole propogator in a bag. Can you put it on the floor in front of a window?

  • i have them in cells... there's 20 cells altogether... i have fly screens on every window and the sliding door is in a shaded part of my garden... i mean as soon as i put it outside in the morning its clouds up in the propagator near enough straight away, so i imagine its quite humid in there... its just the evenings that i think could be proving a problem... maybe ill have to hope for the best for now atleast until the weather gets warmer??

  • Is there a room or an area where you could leave a light on a timer so that its on overnight? We do this with our chillis and they do appreciate it. If you have a standard lamp or similar you can put them under it would help the plants.

  • Jamie I have been thinking.... ( it takes a while sometime) try planting some later... Planting them a month later will increase the ambient temperature plus being in Cyprus you don't have to worry about outside temp later in the year as much as here in the wet cold uk.... Trial it I think you should hold off till end of march ... That means that given scotch bonnet as an example which normally take 120 days to mature they would still be ok in your climate and would mature end of august time ( still v warm over there from memory!)

  • My over wintered purple riot has a flower on it hurrah
