  • 20 is fine chillies do well at 28 and down but anything lower than 5 they will stop growing and go I to stasis... This is when they stunt themselves it takes a lot of nutrients and heat to get them going again

My chillies so far. I had real difficulties with germination owing to a certain Lordship who kept turning the propagator off (then add flu and suddenly its almost May!) so I only have Scotch Bonnet and Jalapenos.

  • I start feeding at about the size claringtons are above..... I feed at a quater of the recommended for 2 weeks then half for 2 weeks so on and so on until they are on full nutes.... Also wait for them to wilt a little as they take the nutes up quicker...there are so many nutrients out there chilli focus is ace but if ur pushing the boat out then look at Buddhas tree as they cater for root development, growth and flowering ........clarington they look ace the weather is picking up now so they should start romping away..... I'm using jacks magic compost this year and bat poo!!! Guano they are love love loving it.... I so wish I could post pics I should get an Instagram account and copy the link..... Clarington I cloning a few atm ( Galapoganese wild) she's wonderfully hairy and her leaves smell like chillis!!!! Remind me later in the year I will send you one ......

I use dilute tomato feed, works well. Cold stunting growth is very true. I put some Capsicum annuum out too soon last year, they never did catch up, or produce a good crop. Ones sheltered in a coldframe for a few weeks longer did much better. Capsicum pubescens and Capsicum baccatum are more cold tolerant. Capsicum chinense are wimps.

  • Diluted tomato food is good as the npk is similar but they are a generic feed ..... I would always go for something more specific now the results are amazing
  • If you have the time, inclination and money, then of course you'll be drawn to Chilli Focus or similar, although the jury is still out whether it's really better than standard or 'generic' tomato feed. I grow tomatoes as much as chillis, and find the shared feed is ok.

I would also say tomato feed for chillis will be dramatically better than standard plant feed, primarily due to lower nitrogen.

And especially if it is NPK+ not just NPK.The main plus difference will be in magnesium, although possibly other micro-nutrients. If there's a mention of seaweed, it usually means there will be magnesium as well, not just basic NPK, but as always, read the label.
