Like the Diary - French ones are laid out really well but you do need a good dictionary! Designs are great though. Are you going to look at Supermoon programme tonight? Wonder if they will cover gardening? Certainly tidal patterns will be interesting if it comes up.
Weather for February not too good I'm afraid. Apparently it is going to be very cold for the Season with the 10-25th particularly susceptible to ice and hard frosts. Lots of irregularities in world climate forecast from the 12th. Look out for freezing fog on the 17th and snow 20-21st Tendency towards wet and cold weather as from 26th with snow at higher levels. -Oh Joy! Definately going to ask O/H to put up greenhouse.
No idea which cornus has grown here -just loads of it!!! Great joy yesterday when I saw Primevera resurrecting themselves in Bog Garden -Please please no more rain!! -Big plans afoot to turn this area into proper pond. O/H not amused as next to Fixed new Brick BBQ -Think he may fear falling in after a drop of vino next Summer!
I watched the programme and found it sadly superficial. Not so much interested in how the Chinese or anybody else celebrates a new moon. Much more interested in its effects on tides, wildlife, plants and even human moods and physiology.
I knew what a blue moon was already.
Seems to me we've had lots of super moons since we moved here in October 2016. We also have clearer skies here than in rainy old Belgium and no streetlights in our area so we see a lot more moon and stars than before.
It often looks a bit orange when it's low but the red moon was on the other side of the world Lily P - all to do with the sun's position.

Well we recorded Wonders of The Moon too, and I have just watched it. It was Ok but I agree nothing that none of us didn't know really. I have to say that I prefer a good solid Harvest Moon -That can be stunning. No-one mentioned gardening or farming which was a shame. Maybe too far fetched for some, although direct linking water tables with tides would have been useful info.
Anyway here is the Lunar Calender 3-12th February 2018.
3-6th Feb (That seems a long time!) Root days with Moon descending in Virgo.Plant shallots in non manured ground in ridges if it is still wet and cover with fleece not only for warmth but to stop birds pulling tips out.Thin out turnips if you sowed them 1st January.
7/8th Feb - Flower Days with Moon in Libra. Divide snowdrops in the green and plant Anemones de Caen and ranunculus corms. If you have no snow or frost remove soil from artichokes and seperate larger roots. Plant these in new patch, earth up old plants again and fleece new stock.
9/10th Feb - Leaf Days with Moon in Scorpio - Prick out Lettuce and Cabbage sown 22-25th January, protecting bases from slugs with collars. Prune Box hedging.
11/12/13th Feb - Fruit Days -No Gardening after 9.10am on 11th as Moon apogee (Furthest point from Earth) Sow tomatoes under heat in greenhouse or over radiator indoors Sow aubergines/peppers and chillies under glass. Temps for all 18-20c.
Well that's a start. With lighter evening coming and mornings slowly drawing out -Spring seems to be on the way.
Cats tip toeing across very frosty lawn this morning. Kitten arrived bearing gift of tatty vole (first conquest?!) -Birds going mad over fat balls -Current count 18 sparrows, 5 great tits, 12 blue tits. 3 starlings, 2 robins at back of house and 3 in front. -Added sunflower seeds yesterday as cold nights forecast.
Onions, garlic and first peas doing well under fleece. Chitting first potatoes, and contemplating sowing some broad beans and more peas next week. Greenhouse also goes up next week weather willing, at last I have found a place for it (at least in my mind, daren't tell O/H that I might change it!)
Here is Lunar Calender for 16-25th Feb as no gardening recommended for 14/15th due to partial eclipse of the Sun and noeud descending.
16/17th Feb -Moon ascending -Flower Days - Sow Broccoli in nursery bed. Under cover in heated trays sow Summer Cauliflowers. Sow Busy Lizzies (impatiens) under heat as well but without covering seeds with soil.
18/19/20/21st Feb - Moon ascending in Pisces so Leaf Days - Every month when the Moon is in Pisces it is a good time to sow salad leaf crops, in this instance you are sowing for a May harvest. Sow Spring Spinach, dandelion, cress and rocket, keeping all these damp until sprouted. -Sow all these where they are to be harvested outside, as they need a cold snap to kick start. (This will be a first for me as I always start salads indoors at this time of year, but with raised beds and the protection of the sides, it might be worth a go -Have you tried it before?)
22nd Feb -Fruit Day (Sorry only one) -make use of this to sow round peas/broad beans and mangetout outside. Earth up well as they sprout.
23/24 and 25th up to 11.32am - Root days with Moon ascending in Taurus. Under heat sow celeriac In nursery bed sow summer and autumn leeks.
Between 15-25th Feb keep an eye on stored crops as this is the time of year when they start to re-sprout or go off.
Hoping all is well with you -Preparing for first Garden Fair mid March. Just a thought -If any of you are coming to France this year, would you like me to tell you where Events are taking place? There are some super hidden treasures here off the beaten track, and many Open Gardens and Events not listed in UK Mags. -Off to Rennes again tomorrow. Must get back to finishing marmelade and make scones for Rennes/Exeter Twinning Stand.
Hope the fair goes well at Rennes BF. I have potatoes chitting too - Charlotte which I never see on sale down here and Bintje which are a Belgian favourite for frites. Ours will be for baking and mashing.
Lots of bird activity here too with magpies making a new nest high up in the poplar tree and masses of sparrows, tits and chaffinches around the feeders. Older kitty very excited about teh sparrows refurnishing their nests in the eaves.
I shall be making mango chutney and blood orange and chilli marmalade today but for our own consumption.
