Glad no gardening today and tomorrow as indicated on Lunar Calender. Howling gale - Just rescued 2 seed trays trying to leave home over hedge! Peas are up HURRAY!!
Will do Lunar Calender from 15th for a fortnight before I go to UK. Can't type on I-pads or phones. Have not got Xray eyes for small keyboards!! Need my big ABC computer at home.
I use this web site to see what moon is up to (when we have so much cloud and you can't see it!) and sow my seeds accordingly. Today I planted chillies, begonias and violas for germinating on my spare room window ledge. Last month I did tomatoes and parsnips in plug-plant cells and they are ready for hardening off in the unheated green house soon! It works for me....
Great excitement today - Got on to Veg plot without sinking in! Sowed Rondo and Petit Provence Peas. The Sutton Broad Beans, plus popped some white onion sets (Silver Moon) in a spare patch which I pull as spring onions. Such a joy to get going at last. Don't want to be in UK next week - want to be in the garden!! - Great to know about other websites. Always good to compare, you get a more rounded picture.
Watch out for Lunar Calender on Monday before I jump on the ferry.
Have been to allotment today and dug up last of leeks and weeded bed
Also I use shredded material for paths so put some more down
Ground still wet from yesterday's none stop rain but not to bad to dig , it drains well
Going up tomorrow for full day of digging and hoeing , the site is due to have some rotted horse manure delivered so going to get some both it all goes
Really upset weather brilliant and I'm going to be in the wrong country (UK)!!
Still popping seedlings on Utility Room windowsill as house has to be shuttered up to maintain Insurance which means all dark! (I call it an invitation to burglars but laws are laws) Daren't put them in greenhouse, just too cold.
So here is Lunar Calender 16 -26th March. Just a tip from BIODY - Calender if you want to avoid onions or shallots bolting this year put the sets in 24/25th March 'Root Days' and plant asparagus 18/19th 'leaf days' or 24/25th March 'Root Days' (Sorry no explanation why - Does anyone else know??)
16/17 March Moon descending in Gemini so Flower Days . Prune buddlea and Perovskia plus other summer flowering shrubs that are overgrown. Take cuttings of Chrysanthemums and Fuchsias.Prick out Geraniums sown 9/10th Feb.
18/19th March Moon in Cancer so Water Days 'Leaf' Plant and divide herbs and Rhubarb. Prune cotoneasters. Thin out lettuce/spinach and other salad crops sown 11-13th Feb. Put down Ferramol or other slug deterrant to trap slugs rising up to meet Cosmic Force of Spring Equinox - They will start munching everything from now onwards!
20/21/22 March Spring Equinox on 20th Jupiter and Moon unite in Leo - Much much warmer. Fruit Days Plant out strawberry plants and other container grown small fruit. Pot on aubergines/Chillies and peppers sown 5/6 Feb and tomatoes sown 14th Feb Aaaah - I shan't be here!!!! Hoping I might get away with it on 23rd but I see no gardening before 5pm as Lunar Eclipse. Will change ferry!!
23/24/25th March Root Days Moon in Virgo Earth Days so plant potatoes (Interesting as tradition always says Easter) Start earthing up when they are just 25cms - before this can weaken new root system - it must be allowed to strengthen a little longer. Plant out leeks sown 19-21st January. On 25th No gardening after 9.10am Moon at furthest point from earth so less cosmic influence. Storms predicted Good Friday in Northern hemisphere. Hope not - want to crack on to make up for week away!
Thanks BF. I think tradition only says Easter for potatoes as people had 4 days to do it from Good Friday to Easter Monday with a break for church.
Asparagus counts as leaves but also need good roots to produce all the shoots and onions are roots.
We have glorious sunshine at the mo but every day starts with a heavy frost and takes hours to warm up. That should change in time for me to tend to my buddleas tho. My red onion sets will go into modules first so they don't get a shock in a late frost.
Have a good time in the UK. Don't fret, your garden will still be there when you get home and you'll no doubt take it some presents.

I use this as a quick refrence as it gives all 3 lunar phases depending on which sytem you follow. Biodynamic for me - http://www.the-gardeners-calendar.co.uk/Moon_Planting.asp
BioFreak's regular calendar postings give more detail tho so more interesting.
