Ferry Service Newhaven-Dieppe - so yes it is by the sea! - Very pretty pedestrianised town - Many visitirs as not expensive and really good restaurants plus cheap quality hotels. Dropping down to Rouen passing through stunning wooded countryside is well worth the effort, plus Monet's garden not far from Dieppe. Lots to see and do round there. Will do Calender later today - Toasted veg if I do not go and open greenhouse!

Drove thru Rouen on our way home from the Vendée - lovely route which avoid Paris and its dreadful orbital road.    Still haven't been to Monet's garden but it is on the list now that OH is retired and available.

No gardening for me for a few days as I have to get the kitchen re-decorated.  OH is busy clearing old vegetation and doing lawn edges today and I hope to get out there for an hour or two while plaster repairs or paint dry.   Should be done and dusted by Monday so I can crack on with gardening fun so yes please with the calendar BF.

Here is Lunar Calender 13th - 26th April - Watch out for freak hot days 14th & 17th also best days to control slugs 14th -16th (Not sure why!) May be an accident but have noticed no slug or snail attacks anywhere around forget me nots - Rampant already everywhere else. -Have we been missing a trick on companion planting here??

13th April - Moon in Gemini Flower Day - Plant gladioli/cannas/dahlias and other summer bulbs outside. My flowers sown 5th April have sprouted already delighted!Thin out broccoli & Cauliflower sown 8th March.

14/15th April - Moon descending in Cancer Leaf Days - Plant out salad crops and herbs. Prune evergreen trees and hedges. Mow and scarify lawns. Under cover plant out endive sown 9-11th March

16/17/18th April Moon in Leo - Fruit Days - Earth up peas & broad beans (Never earthed up peas?) Plant out aubergines/peppers and chillies sown 3/4th March & tomatoes sown 14th Feb.Plant marigolds next to tomatoes to discourage harmful nematodes. Plant out Cucumbers and melons sown 3-5th March - Wait until mid May for all these things if still too cold outside.

19/20/21/22 April - Gosh that's a long time! Root Days. And a new tip I've never come across. Lift leeks sown 7/8th Feb Let them dry out on the ground for 2 days, trim the leaves and roots and then replant them! Thin out celeriac sown 2/3 april. Edge potager with Jerusalem Artichokes thinking of letting them throw shade over salad crops during hot summer days.

23/24 April - Full Moon Flower Days Plant annuals outside in pots if warm enough. Thin annuals sown 4/5th April. Pot on Buzy Lizzies and petunias sown 8th March.

25/26th April - Moon in Virgo - Leaf Days Plant different Basils out in pots. Plant out tender herbs and salads. Plant out brussel sprouts and cabbage sown 9/11th March.

Definitely too cold here for half hardy annuals and haven't done any sowing of my own cos of being away over the Easter break and not trusting Possum to care for babies.

Kitchen and hall decorating all done for now but have wall lamps to fit in a bathroom.  Bit stymied for the mo after getting a huge infection from the teeniest speck of splinter left in my right thumb.  All cleaned out and healing now but can't drive secateurs or a trowel or a hoe at the mo.

    Frustrated.

Well, even I did not think that snow/hail/ice and other horrors would arrive from the Arctic. Weather prediction nearly right I suppose because I see that I did say North wind and lots of rain (Just frozen rain!!) - At the Garden Fair south of Rouen last w/e several nurseries lost their geraniums to frost on Saturday night, and it was a bitter w/e. I hesitate to predict May but here goes based on BioD Calender: We shall have 6 warm trines in May which means a hike in temperatures particularly from 3rd-13th Jupiter in Leo and Pluto in Sagittarius bring lots of warmth cooling slightly on 14th when the Sun enters Taurus from Aries. Watch out around 21/22nd as storms predicted with colder temperatures again continueing until the 28th when alot of rain is predicted until end of month with possible snow in the North (Scotland??).  Smallholders note that Hay should be cut at Flower Times to guarantee extra nourishment in stems. Best transplanting dates are 9th - 24th May. If you raise your own seed potatoes transplant them from 6th - 7th. Mars Jupiter and Saturn can be clearly seen evry night this month. Make sure that you prepare your Nettle Brew to aid healthy growth. I've already filled a dustbin with a mix of nettles and comfrey after frantic weeding on return from Garden Fair yesterday! Went to get rain water from barrel, and horror of horrors found that I had forgotten to turn gutter tap to 'on' after Winter, so nearly empty - and I told you all to make sure your barrels were full as a relatively dry month ahead!!

I see the farmers have earthed up their peas and beans - I haven't because I have not got alot of space to do so between rows as did not know about it. To avoid wind rock I see this makes sense but as I grow The Sutton Broad Beans which are short anyway and dwarf peas, I think I should be OK. Apparently you earth up Leeks as well to create long white shanks - Has anyone done this?? Lots of currants and gooseberries coming. Frosted peach blossom so no high hopes there. Oh - On French news the Rhone Valley has lost alot of Buds on the vines to frost so less wine likely from here/Burgundy and Champagne areas - price hike indicated for next year - Just thought any wine lovers would like to be fore warned!

So here is Lunar Calender from 3 - 19th May.

3/4/5th May - Leaf Days Moon Ascending in Gemini and Uranus. Sow salad crops outside, in sheltered shady spot to avoid leaf burn and wilt when warmer days arrive. Sow Brussel Sprouts in Nursery bed and keep ground moist to aid early sprouting.

6/7th May - Fruit Days. On 6th No gardening before 10.20am the Moon nearest to Earth so forces too strong for plants to bear. Sow courgettes/cucumbers outside allowing 1metre in preference between plants (This seems alot??)

8/9th May - Moon in Taurus - Root Days Sow winter carrots and summer radish. Sow more beetroot and parsnips.

10/11th May - Moon descending in Gemini - Flower Days. Plant out all flowers sown 10th February as risk of frost nearly over now (Tradition here says the 13th is the last danger period for a visit from the Saints de Glace (Frost Saints). Plant out Summer bulbs and cauliflowers plus broccoli sown 8th March.

12/13th May - Moon in Cancer - Leaf Days. Thin out leeks sown 6-8 April and prick them out 10cms apart in nursery beds together with celery and fennel (bulb fennel) as they work well together. (Celery and Bulb fennel give out smell that deflects onion fly from target crop)

Evening of 13th then 14/15th May - Fruit Days Moon in Leo. Plant out aubergines/peppers/chillies and tomatoes sown 3/5th March and courgettes plus cucumbers sown 9th April (Not sure mine will be big enough plus staying in greenhouse anyway - How are yours getting on?) - Place nettle leaves in bottom of tomato holes plus a little comfrey - the nettles will provide short term nourishment and the comfrey will kick in later to add extra when the fruit form.Keep well watered. 15th No gardeing after 4.30pm Moon in the middle of ecliptique cycle (noeud)harmful to plants. Note to grow Comfrey well it must be moist at all times.

16/17/18/19th May - Moon descending in Scorpio - Root Days. Thin out parsnips sown 10-12th April. Plant out leeks sown 13-16th March - Trim the roots and tops, then lay them out on soil for 2 days before re-planting to eliminate leek moth larva. Alternate rows with carrots sow that the smell from the leeks halts carrot fly. Thin out beetroot sown 29-30th April. Prick out celeriac sown 2-3 april. 19th no gardening before 2.15pm Moon at furthest point from Earth so forces too weak.

So lots to do in the first half of this month. Good luck and Happy Gardening! Keep the comments coming - we need to compare notes!

Oh - Just in passing my celery sown last year and overwintered outside is fantastic now - Loads of leaves and hearting up. Should I let it self seed to provide green manure this autumn?? - Never grown it before - Does it normally take this long to mature?
