    Hi there,

well I managed to resist and left the clematis in pots. They grew a bit, but no flowers which I guess is to be expected.  Should I pot them on into even bigger pots do you think or just leave them until they die back, over-winter them in a cold frame and plant on the garden next spring?

Hi Tootles -  I bought three clematis earlier this year, all in 4" pots, including Duchess of Edinburgh. I potted them on into those deep clematis pots  (around 9"/10" deep) and let them grow on. They're all a good size now with decent root systems, and I'll plant them out soon into their final places. If I was you, I'd do the same and then keep them till spring before planting out. They stand a better chance of establishing well and fighting off the slugs and snails if they're bigger. They'll be fine in a sheltered corner. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thanks Fairygirl. I'll do just that. Hope you get lots of lovely flowers on yours.

Ive had lots of Clematis from him and I wldnt hesitate to recommend him. I live abroad and when they arrive each one is in its own long box so no damage on their long journey. Ive had the odd one flower the first yr but all in the second yr. Hope this helps you.

  • Just in case anyone is still accessing this thread -

I live in Spain, where the heat makes growing hybrid clematis a real challenge. I wanted to experiment with clematis in the garden and so ordered from 3 companies: Clematis Man, Taylors and Thorncroft.  I actually saw no difference in most of the plants in terms of roots when they arrived. The ones I got from Clematis Man were mostly (about 10 out of the 12 I ordered) as well developed (like he says they are 2 years old too) as the other companies. They were smaller on top, but that is, for me, not so relevant. It also meant he packaged the plants much more effectively and cheaply than the other companies. I didn't pot them on because the root systems were just too good. Within a couple of months I had flowers starting on some, and throughout this summer I've had a great show and seen no difference the performance of his and the other companies.  I would order all from this company if the selection was wider.  I'll try and upload a few photos:
