This is a picture of a bud from my (mature) Duchess of Edinburgh - when they look like this you know they are going to develop into good flowers.  The 6 small outer leaves on the stem things are about 7 inches across

I'll post more pics as the flowers develop - they are quite spectacular!

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Ooh, thanks BobTheGardener.  Mine isn't near that stage yet.  Yours look very healthy and it's good to get an idea of where the flowers will come from.  I'll get a photo tomorrow (today!) and see what you think.  I'm a bit paranoid having read all that can go wrong!

Sorry, the middle one was supposed to be a close up of the D of Edinburgh

They look good dont they? Hope mine will be ok, I didn't think not to plant them out yet. I bought clems from aldi, morrisons and reduced section at GC for between ??2 and ??5. Just had to go with varieties they had. Wish id known about clematis man bbefore so I could have chosen exactly the ones I wanted! Good website. Have you put him on the good suppliers thread? look forward to more photos as they progress.

Mrs Garden, try TaylorClematis's website too.  They give a lot of help choosing the plants and they come as 2 year old quite large plants.  Ha ha, whether they will survive in my amateur hands is another thing image

I'm sure yours will be good.  Don't you just love Clematis?  If mine ever flower, I'll be doing a dance on the spot!!!

Hi folks, here's my Duchess of Edinburgh. I planted it adjacent to my rose which is Madam Alfred Carriere.  I understand that a white rose with a white clematis is a match made in heaven. I'm hoping they will grow well together and eventually cover the arch. Fingers and toes crossed!

Taylors is where I looked originally but decided on the places above because of the price! Hopefully mine will catch up. May get round to posting pics soon, esp president which is 'huge' and cost me ??2.
