Ah right, haven't got Harvest Moon. Did you buy the plant or manage to get some seeds? I accidently spent £120 the other week buy 53 different echinacea cultivar seeds from Canada. Sowed friday. Now I need the English ones.
Why is it we have quite a few cultivars available, but no seeds?
And I have heard that some of the newer echinaceas have a rubbish root system and are really weak, but didn't know they were slightly tender too! Thinking I may have to buy another greenhouse haha. I'm going for national collection, well, get as near to it as I can anyway. I've tried contacting the national collection holder, but to no avail
Hi Ryan, have you contacted "Plant Heritage" which is the umbrella organisation for the National Collections. Used to be called the NCPPG. I might be able to help with a contact.
It is s god to know that I am not the only silly billy out here! I have the idea that all gardeners cannot resist a plant, or anything that is reduced in price, or - if you are like me - a poor plant lurking sadly in the 'reduced to clear' box, that looks half dead! My local shop now greets me with 'hello, we've got some dead plants for you to look at!'. Having said that, I have a large golden bay tree I got when small for 49p., and several similar bargains that just needed TLC - but many don't make it. I comfort myself with the thought that at least they had a comfortable home and chance - oh dear, how sad is that?
I found some Poached Egg plant seeds and some Marigolds, Lobelia, Candytuft and 2 different types of Sweet Peas. Got seed trays and JI seed compost. Didn't even spend £10 on it all so yes I'm a silly billy........ but a happy one
Please beware of Nigella (the plant) it is very invasive; took about 3 years of pulling them up to get rid of one sowing. Or you could painstakingly dead head each flower if you really want to drive yourself mad.

But then you wouldn't get those lovely seed heads artjak
I think nigella could be marketed as ground cover
Having said that, I lost it and had to buy seeds a few years ago, I've got the ground cover back now though
I have Nigella, all self sets, I am fond of it. Not a big problem on clay, quite easy to pull out.
Wish I could say the same for Aquilegia (pullin out I mean) Tough as old boots here unless you get them small. Get everywhere, pots etc...I think helped by the birds I feed. No good deed goes unpunished.
Don't get me going about Alchemilia Mollis ? Lady's Mantle..If I ever meet Mr. T I will have words with him. Planted after his rave review, great for holding raindrops, cut flowers off it won't seed...so why is it all over my green stuff" ?
Not patient enough with seeds ...bought my plants. Always looking for best prices though....we have a few good nurseries locally here too.
Yes, you do need to,build up as big a root system as possible before allowing echinaceas to flower. Some varieties really are very poor bred for their brilliant flower colour but at the expense of a decent constitution. They simply just flop.
Why few cultivars able to seed? Many are sterile. So a mixture of old and new seems to be the solution.
Hey! How can you "accidentally" spend £120? Mind you I once ordered 3 digital recorders by pressing "submit" too many times as I checked my order. Hmmmmmm! I guess I really am a sillee billee
Think I may need to spend the money I'm meant to be saving for my car insurance for when I pass! It is a good cause, so I'm sure mum wouldn't mind.
There seem to be so many nurseries around your neck of the woods, jealous much!
Ive got 8 straight species and a few cultivars growing happily and flowering prolifically, not now, but there were in September haha. With the sterile cultivars, what would be the methods they'd use to multiply the plant?
Not going to lie, that is pretty silly nut I didn't actually buy them by accident, but it's what I always tell my mum when she gets emails from paypal saying they've taken £120 out her account ( and the odd tenner every well for another plant). Butt I do always pay her back, she may just have to wait a week or so! But I never buy anything near the end of the month, as there's never any money in her account then...I shouldn't know these things!
WOODGREEN - if you could that would be greatly appreciated
