Lots of refreshing rain through the night but fine now and dry forecast for the rest of today so the weeds should be easy to pull out now. My sweet pea trial i was trying to keep back for a great show in August has responded to the rain by opening its flowers so i shall be deadheading daily now to keep them flowering. they are Old Spice Mixed and Sir Henry Cecil and the smell from the few that have opened is delightful. I bet the new flower seeds I sowed last week are just delighted with this rain and the slugs too no doubt. But the runner beans will not need watering today and when the beds have dried up a bit I will harvest the spring planted garlic and plant out my sweetcorn which looks exactly the same size as Monty's were last night on TV as were my harvest of Charlotte potatoes.
Marion your flowers are all lovely, my favourite one is the last one the colours are so vibrant, it rained all night and today has been sunshine but a cooler wind, talking of potatoes and garlic, I'm starving so it's new potatoes, veg and garlic butter on steak mmmmmm
My hundred or so tomato plants in eight varieties have all been given a half strength feed this morning, tied in to their stakes, side-shoots removed and flowerng trusses tapped to help pollination though the bees are buzzing round them in the sunshine. Three of my pots of sweet peas have been carried into the front garden and I could sniff their perfume as i carried them, even though only a few flowers are open. I took some broad beans nextdoor and admired my neighbour's pelargoniums which are huge and covered in flowers, having been left in the ground all last winter. I must find a few sheltered spots for some of mine this year as the conservatory will not hold them all. My cucumelons seem to be growing bigger now but not yet oea size! I have pinched out the tops so that may help double their bulk. !8 degrees and dry forecast for today so lots of jobs could be tackled. My weigela bushes are shrinking fast now I have taken the secateurs up to them. This week should see the front garden planted up. more sweet pea pots taken out there and the rest of the grapevines pruned. Terrific grape crop again this year. Strawberries all picked for now but still have "Buddy" which goes on fruiting till October.
Marion, you will never go without food will you , can't believe you have 100 different tomatoe plants thats brilliant, and grapes i love green grapes, they are so morish mnmmmm, you enjoy your day today Marion, where just off to get the groceries
Hooray, more rain through the night but a lovely sunny morning, just what is needed when there is so much work needing done. i should get the last of the pelargoniums and lobelia out of the conservatory today leaving just the last of the gazanias and diascias to be hardened off. I will start picking sweet peas for the house today as a few more have opened their buds and i want lots for the beginning of August. The rest of the garlic could be harvested too and the sweet corn planted now that raised bed has had a good sprinkling of rain on it. My white begonias are as they promised by their species name of odorata, fragrant, and have lots of flowers. After I have picked the ripe tomatoes today I will check on the peppers.and cucamelons. The rest of the pkts of seeds of annuals and half hardy annuals may find a home now too since the first lot are all doing so well. I could have a garden full of beautiful summery flowers in the autumn.
Well, despite the drizzle on and off today I got a lot done in the front garden. With help from an unexpected source. I had just messed up the pavement pruning back my flowering quince and variagated ivy which spills over the front wall and had gone for my broom when our street cleaner arrived and did it for me! So glad I got up early! I planted out 7 more pelargoniums and three more lobelias. Tomorrow if the weather permits I will fill the old iron wheelbarrow and the old tyre. I picked in the few sweet peas that were open and there are hundreds more forming. When the drab weather sent me indoors I brought my notes up to date for the Nation of Gardeners Trials. I must not forget the stats for that now so much is being harvested despite being so busy for Bristol in Bloom.
Another dry morning forecast so out in the front garden again planting up bedding plants and getting out all the weeds and dead wood pruned from shrubs. Husbandry scores marks just like choice of plants and colour does.In my front garden windows through to see different views of it are important too. The fragrant pink jasmine has finished flowering now so I will prune it though much of it gets hidden in the foliage and flowers of the white buddlea it scrambles through. The blue buddlea is in full flower so may find myself having to deadhead the large middle spikes to let the side spikes make a good show. I have found the snippers for deadheading we were given in our welcome box of prsents from Mr. Fothergill very useful indeed this year. I have never had so many flowers to deadhead before, another sign of how the plants reveled in our wet warm winter last year.
Hi Marion, you sound like you've been very busy, are you taking photos of your front garden?, it sounds lovely, I'm feeling very sore today as I went to Legs Tums and Bums last night, I haven't done keep fit for some time now, so I decided to get my bottom back into gear and get back into a routine of exercise Every week now, they say "no pain, no gain", it's been lovely sunshine to day then heavy rain about 4pm and now it's sun shining again , wish I was off work again .
Do you have a Bristol Bloom show Marion ? I'm just curious with all the work you do
