Bit worried about the picture of John Downie. The fruit pictured in my book on Crab Apples shows it as a slightly more elongated shape and with yellow and red colouring. It is described as being orange with red cheeks in F.Fiala's book on flowering Crab apples.
Cannot find a picture of ours either.
Really nice one is M. Gorgeous. Tasted one at Sunall Hall, almost sweet enough to eat raw.
Re hedgerow jelly - I made one which included hips, haws and crab apples as well as other hedgerow fruits years ago, when HFW was just a twinkle in his parents' eye - it was jolly tasty with hare and venison and similar dishes.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Okay, got some more photos but it's hardly a clear day here, never mind.
Here's Golden Hornet 23/Nov/2013
It's laden with crabs considering it's only a maiden. I'm not sure if it's a keeper though since as you can see the crabs are already rotting.
Golden Elf
This is a great Crab, the flowers are scented and the crabs smell of custard, that is, vanilla, again they're only a maiden so I'v not had enough to use but they've been hanging looking beautiful for weeks now, yellow, since September. I'm looking forward to making crabapple jelly from them.
Evereste
This doesn't look anything like the photos, the crabs are the right size and shape but not the colour I was expecting.
I haven't really given this a fair crack of the whip, I just stuck it in the hedge. But time will tell.
My Red Sentinel is absolutely weighed down with apples this year, but Golden Hornet has done nothing - not a single apple on it. Anyone else had this problem? Both did really well last year.

Wow, that is odd. Anything special about where they are? Did the GH flower?
I have a pretty wild area at the end of my garden furthest from the house. The two trees are side by side and were planted on the same day. I think that the GH had blossom. If it hadn't blossomed I am sure that it would have stuck in my mind, so I reckon it must have done. Perhaps the bees like the RS more I would like to plant another, and would like one that the birds really love. Any suggestions?
I think the birds are attracted by the colour as much as anything else. But out of my crabs with my limited experience the John Downie got most attention especially from the magpies. I was hoping other people would comment more on theirs. I was pleased to read about the Red Sentinel being loved by the thrushes. I've got a Cardinal Royal Rowan that gets stripped by the birds as soon as they're red.
I have a young crab apple tree in my garden and the former tall upright branches have begun to hang, some of the leaves have black spots on them and some leaves seems to scrunch up. What's happening to my tree, is it sick? What can I do to help it?

Sorry about the typo earlier, Dolgo not Dogo.
