Oh jim, you've got me chuckling now as I always wanted a silver birch tree. In fact only this year I went for a golden ash but its not put on that much growth since spring. I've emailed a few companies for actual height they supply. But may just plan a trip to local GC and go for whatever they have in stock at the right time as I seem to love everything! Hmmm as for 'looking after' for a year and 'repotting' sounds a bit scary but im not discounting it either.
, I know what you mean I'm terrible too, I want everything. I need at least six gardens. As you can see though the silver birch don't offer much screening in winter but right now they are golden and when the sun is setting they are a site to behold. On that note the Field Mapel is even more beautiful. You've got plenty of time to mull over what you want though. It is a great hobby isn't it?
Oh, I forgot, i'm in love with Crabapples a the moment. Red Sentinel is my current favourite and the garden centres have some lovely specimens at the moment.
This was last year obviously, though we have had snow today and it's now laden with crabs. Gorgeious. They hang for months too unlike some of the earlier ones.
popped in to GC and they have liquidambar trees in stock most of time bit more expensive than some online sites but at least I can see what im getting. OH not keen on removing old tree though....
Yeah, I have Evereste too, it's only it's first year of fruiting but so far the Red Sentinel wins hands down. The apples are slightly smaller on the Evereste too but there is more of them. Red Lantern is a very nice tree too, both for crabs and flowers which both have a very strong scent. The crabs don't hang for very long though though. Same with John Downie. Jelly King has nice crabs and they're still hanging, and a good size, more of a pinky clolour than red. Golden Elf and Golden Hornet are lasting so far with Golden Elf having loads of smaller crabs. They are showing signs of dropping though.
MrsG Yeah, if you can see what you're getting then you can choose the best shaped tree.
Evereste's strength is it's blossom. It's covered in white flowers and looks like a mountain top! But I get loads of crabs too, which feed my flock of blackbirds.

"Evereste" is a brilliant crab….blossom + crabs + autumn colour

Yeah, and it flowers for weeks and weeks. I still had the odd flower in June from it.
