I'm by no means an expert, but I did think Red Admirals were slightly darker in colour....Anyway, Painted Lady is fine by me ....Madge will be pleased, as I took it in the grounds of Sandringham.
I'm not very good at identifying flutterbyes, but I'm trying to get better, so I did some googling. Found this painting of all three types (Red Admiral, Painted Lady and Tortoiseshell) together ......so thought I would share (apologies if it is not really appropriate on Camera Corner, but I found it helpful)
I think it's lovely to know that the Red Admiral's original name had no naval connotations - it was originally known as an Admirable - isn't that great!

Don't want to sound picky, but it is a Red Admiral, and very beautiful.

Sorry, but I think it might be a Painted Lady.
Just looked back at the other Photos loved the holiday pics, and the red squirrel is a beautiful.

Thanks, chicky.....that's very helpful.
Initially I thought is was (as I said) a Tortoiseshell and from your pic it does seem that they & Painted Lady are very similar.
Above 'Painted Lady' slightly tweaked.
PS.....for what it's worth, I have Fairygirl's red squirrel as my PC's background picture.

Definitely a Painted Lady David - gorgeous, and in decline

Red Admiral
That was in my garden round the corner - we got lots of Painted Ladies there
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
How kind David
They are very admirable Dove - beautiful.
We get those, Torties and Peacocks predominantly. Hoping I can get a few Painted Ladies at some stage, while I have this garden.
