  • Thank you Kef. I'm not exactly sure who the first one is, no name or date. My Dad was very keen on photography,  I remember as a child 'helping' him develop his own photos in the 'dark room' which was a little room off the kitchen, such great memories. He died a few years ago and many of his photos are missing. There were some wonderful scenery pics.  Have got quite a few of me as a child but they are not coming out very well on here, will try again later.

  • Well done, Lily.....you're certainly from handsome stock.

Interesting what you say about your Dad's interest in photography, as I (as a lad) used to develop & print my own b&w photographs in much the same way.

Cia - Pleased you enjoy this thread....perhaps we can see pics of your cat/cats sometime.

  • Ha ha think it ended there tho, David, I can remember my dad doing the negatives and photos, the different white trays, the enlarger and then cutting them up on a special gadget. There was a black canister type thing with a lid that you had to turn the top, think that was for the negs, I felt very important when I was allowed to 'help' I have great memories of those times, and sitting in the dark for some reason was exciting in itself!!image happy days

  • Can help there, Lily.

The 'canister type thing' you describe would be a developing tank. The film was removed from the camera in darkness (or maybe a small red light)..then wound around a plastic spool which was placed inside the tank. The top was the replaced & the liquid developer was then added through a hole in the top....a plastic stick was then put in the hole....this was used to rotate the spool containing the film & thus agitated the developer.

After this process the film (now negatives) was removed from the tank and washed, this was followed by placing in a tray of *'fixing' solution, the washed again before being hung-up with a peg on a line.

Next the negatives were cut-up individually prior to printing and/or enlarging.

*After fixing daylight could be allowed.

  • Don't remember the stick, but remember 'winding' the top round with my fingers' when grown up enough' lol, yes remember the different size white trays and negs hanging up, such fun.

Kef, still can't find cossie pic, but this is me, think about 2

  • KEF - Just spotted this "David I set it back to auto easy but still get macro flower in top left of screen when I go in close."

Your Coolpix has a magic little facility which automatically puts it in macro mode when you get close to a subject.

     Paternal Grandmother.

David, I doubt either family had money to pay a photographer, so would these have DIY ones?  The first must have been taken about 1924, the other I've no idea.
