Yes it was a butterfly (I think!! I'm not an expert and maybe could be a moth???).
I'll admit I did cheat a bit as it was on the privet root my OH was removing, so I coaxed it onto a leaf (so it didn't get harmed) then placed it on the Sedum, definitely had wings, although a big big body and I did say to OH it was like no butterfly I had seen but was definitely alive and looked just like that
So it is a butterfly then, thanks Bob. I know very little about butterflies and it was OH that called me over to look at it, just as he was about to put the spade there!!! So I moved it and took the photos, didn't have time to get my proper camera so used the iPad
So sorry for doubting your butterfly, OL ...I thought it was one of those fluttering butterflies on a wire (so available, along with kiss-me-quick hats, in Blackpool) .....a really nice shot!
That's ok David, I'll forgive you.....I don't have much choice when I need SP advice More insulting is you thinking that I would actually buy something that naff off Blackpool prom LOL
Thanks Potty , it was beautiful and also very unusual for our garden, especially staying still!!

This was the same butterfly at the bottom of the root as I was trying to move it...honestly it's real
It's a female Peacock butterfly. The male has a body which extends all the way to the rear of the wings.

This very rare wild flower is only to be found in my native Staffordshire at this time of year.
