Only John and I were awake this morning when I looked in earlier.
Will do the flower count later. (It won't take long)
I've foolishly ordered 25 hedging roses, rosa rugosa. They are due to arrive Saturday. Perhaps if I send my private helicopter Verdun will give me a hand.
Step 10 in the planting instructions says, 'finish filling the planting hole with soil and any soil left over use to make a temporary berm above the perimiter of the roots'. What's a berm? Google didn't come up with an answer. I can only assume its a circular ridge of soil.
I've also ordered mycorrhizal fungus to use in the planting. It was recommended to use this but has anyone used it and found it made a difference?
I've seen shrubs planted with a sort of temporary small 'bank' around to hold water when watering - one of the TV gardeners has shown it, but can't think who - might be Monty D.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Wet, cold and miserable here. Had planned a walk but don't fancy it.
Last night my cunning plan was to have a champagne breakfast with salmon...strange what a few vinos do to you, tea and toast seemed more appealing this morning.
Will have the fizz and salmon as a starter later followed by a roast beef meal with the full works and a nice red, and then tomorrow it's behave time. H will have to hide the uneaten goodies.
I need to sort out the fridge, I'm not usually wasteful but some stuff needs throwing out, who bought a large carton of extra double cream? Surely not me
Hi Pottie, if the roses are going where roses have been before you will need M.Fungus. If not I would recommend john Inness no 3 with some fish blood and bone. However MF will not do ant harm - it's just rather expensive. John H
Morning everyone. Hope you all survived your wild hedonistic parties last night..
Have done my flower count from indoors as my cough/cold has really taking hold. Very kind of my sister to share...
Weather is slightly better than it's been of late, but that wouldn't be hard. I swear that poor robin's got webbed feet now...
Don't think I'd need a 'berm' round any of my plants Pam - they seem to be drowning quite effectively on their own just now. A snorkel would be more use to them! Think Dove and Woody are right with their descriptions. It's supposed to help retain water especially when planting trees or hedging so that they don't go short, but I didn't think it was necessary at this time of year. Lack of water isn't something I have to worry about up here though! Not used the micro fungus before. I put hedge in recently inside my new fence, but I just used plenty of compost and I'd put some rotted manure on the other side of the fence in the summer too, as the ground had just been all compacted grass.
Enjoy your day all. Glad you're doing so well John H
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Berm, that is how I've seen shrubs planted in Greece, also some veg. Reminds me of making a moat around a sandcastle.
Lizzie you could have had the cream but it was use by 30th.
It's now throwing it down outside...oops just remembered H hasn't dug any leeks for the meal. I won't be cruel and send him outside, as I'm not prepared to go, so maybe roasted shallots instead.

Happy New Year again,

Will do the flower count later. (It won't take long)

A berm is a sort of bank... you would use one to hold back a flood?

Best go and get my lazy self in the shower.
BFN have a good day all.
KEF I wish you could send the extra double cream here! They aren't good at fresh double cream in France.

Thanks for your replies all.
I don't think I'll need a 'bern' to keep the water round my plants.
Probably wasted my money buying the fungus. Going where no roses have been before. I should have asked on here first.
Get well soon Fairy. Robin
