I had a quick check on the slug pubs again this morning. Another massacre outside. seem to be none in greenhouse or polytunnel, or maybe they're waiting for something better.
It is gorgeous FB, but still a little chilly at only 12c here.
I've just been to check my GH (because it needs checking at least half a dozen times per day!!), a few hours ago there was no sign of life apart from the Hosta and now........baby broccoli, well chuffed Ooh it's so exciting
Have been out in the garden & pottering in the GH today - lovely sunny day here in Bristol. The blossom is over on the Peach & Apricot trees but now the Conference Pear & Cherry are in full bloom (Pics added below).
Have bought some netting for the Brassicas this year as they were decimated by Cabbage White caterpillars last year despite hand picking religiously (I don't want to use chemicals so netting has to be the answer). I set Brussels Sprouts, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Hispi Cabbage and Borecole in their allocated bed this morning, went and sat down for a salad lunch at 12.30 and 2 Cabbage White butterflies flitted across the lawn - they're about early this year! - so the netting went up straight after lunch. For Interest the netting & Frame (approx 1.4 metres square) was from Knowle Nets in Dorset and cost was £72.00 inc Vat & delivery.
See pics below
Last pic is a Japanese Maple 'Purpurea' we bought a few years ago from a Daily Telegraph offer. It's the best its ever been this year.
Lovely garden John I wasn't going to grow broccoli or sprouts this year as last year when I tried they got eaten by something, now I know what and what to do I won't need to ask the question
Last night I made myself 2 lists, one for the food shopping and one for some of the things I need from the gc. My OH and I just went to the SM and guess which list I took with me!! My OH said he was not a bit surprised lol The good thing is there was only one thing i forgot off the food list, although i did buy stuff that wasn't on it!!
Lily, I did exactly the same yesterday but with Wilkos/Aldi, got all my gardening bits in Wilkos (and a few bits that weren't in the list which seems to be the norm!) and then forgot to take the list into Aldi for some food bits!! Luckily I remembered everything although we nearly had Caesar salad with no caesar dressing
Hi., fb., both the Mallards and the Mandarins have been no shows today. I wonder whether they have been put off by foxes, which I quite often see at the back of the pond, which is very overgrown.
In my experience the mallards make terrible parents, they often let the little ones into the stream, which has steep level changes, this usually results in a few drownings, although I have been known to jump in with a net to rescue them.
Lovely day in the garden today, tee-shirt and no fleece today.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
