MrsGarden a shredder does nothing to destroy the viability of acorns, I've tried it The do say pigs clear them very effectively but not sure what the garden would look like afterwards.
Thanks muddy, its matty and others who have acorns, i have none here - maybe i have a secret pig gobbling them up during the night, wondered why the garden was a mess....
Matty2, in the New Forest the acorns are fed to the pigs. In fact some locals are entitled though historic rights to graze their pigs at this time of year to keep the NF ponies from eating too many acorns, which are poisonous to them. I have heard that up to about 100 ponies die each year from this ( out of about 3,000) This right is called "pannage" and this is the name given to the pork when it is eventually sold, and it is supposed to taste paticularly good, altho' I haven't tried it yet.
In the old days hundreds indeed thousands of pigs were put out onto the Forest at this time of year and would have a swineherd with them. Now it's relatively few... so the ponies have to take their chances.
So, do you know any helpful pig farmers where you are?
Although I've reached the grand old age of 27 I don't remember the war but I'm sure I read somewhere that they used roasted acorns as a substitute for coffee. Could that be a solution to your problem Matty?
You're right about the danger to horses Woody. I was talking to a lady and her horse was very ill with colic but happily survived.
just found this photo while looking for something else & it reminded me how lovely the garden looked earlier on in the summer/late spring! Hope the same for next year as everything is a bit waterlogged & windblown now (including me)
Afternoon. It is already getting dark , After a beautiful sunny morning it is overcast now.
I planted up my front troughs for the window sills. After popping to GC to get more cyclamen.

Between me and neighbours
Freshly planted up on gateposts.
I was pleased with what I got done as I also planted up alliums and some primulas in the bed under the front window. Later I'm going to plant up some sweetpeas. Then I just have to wait 'till spring.
Hi all. Been back to hospital with M undue stress now over all okay..phew. Just got to sort out her central heating being flushed out and life ok. If you ignore huge amounts of leaves to be raked at hers, but at least I can scoff maltesers and crunchies guilt free when we do it.
We've been leaf raking here, weeds from veg bed, propped up broc', last of "tender" pots in GH's. Last of needing to be pruned been done and cut some plants down so next door get more light in winter. Then admired our efforts with a can under the newly established outdoor light. Bit early for a drink I know, but will be too cold to celebrate o/s later.
Clueless we had a lot of the devils last night, they bit the dust well actually got crunched by the mole.
