miss daisy, there are nurseries who specialise in hedging plants and you can buy easilt by mail order online. laurel does grow quickly and birds love to nest in it. As for the clipping in a few years' time once a year should do it with the pruners, not a hedgecutter which would slice the large leaves in two!
As for the corner near oak trees I have lovely ferns and foxgloves growing under a huge eucalyptus tree and they did not need watering at all in the drought. Just buy ferns that say "Adaptable" on the label.
Hurrah! My loblia seeds have sprouted, first time ever!!!
Kate: Until I start properly sorting my garden out and making proper headway I will change my name. I have not started planting in my raised beds yet. But love reading all the tips. Really encouraging!
My garden has evolved from an expensive bedding area to a wonderful perrenial garden the birds and bees love it and as my last name laidback suggests I dont want to be a slave to it. My only concession to bedding is Cosmis I love them but will try seeds next year. I dont water very often (it is Scotland after all) and the birds and bees do all the pest business. My Camelia is looking very sad after the bad winter and high winds I suspect it will have to go but will wait and see it deserves a chance after 10 years. Thanks for the for the info on new plant programm BBC 4. What a great way to learn from others may the blog continue
lazygardenr - great news! I'm looking forward to hearing more about your gardening ventures
