Hi guys, I have a new home and am looking at taking out plants and replacing them with more wildlife friendly shrubs. I'd love to plant pear, mt ash, buddleia. But I need advice as to which plants could go.
Here are my mystery plants/shrubs:
many thanks for looking

Hi Jesse -
1 is Escallonia
2 is Rhododendron
3 and 5 are Pieris - 2 different varieties
4 is Euonymous
5 is Choisya
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Thanks Fairygirl. The only one I like is the red leaved Pieris. The last picture. I'd love to take out the others.
if you don't like them I'd get rid of them Jesse. It's all down to personal taste. I like that little variegated euonymus, it's very reliable as a low shrub. I like choisya, it's a fresh green and I like the smell of the leaves, many people don't. Not too keen on escallonia and can't grow the other 2 here.

and this one drives me mad, takes up space where I could grow something much nicer. Really not a fan of it. Previous owners taste in plants not mine at all. Thanks nutcutlet, I heard Monty Don say that recently, its all personal taste.
.
ah, google says calla lily. mmm..
Out they go then
Bring in the buddleia, lavender, oregano/marjorum. Crocus and pulmonaria for the early bees. Snowdrops and hellebores to cheer you up when winter has gone on too long. There's lots of good stuff out there. Your gardens's previous owner just lacked imagination

Great minds think alike. This is my first garden so Im a wee bit apprehensive, but thery're going. Going in over the next few weeks:
Daffodils, crocus, snowdrop, hellebores, the pink buddleia, probably a pear tree and then some box in the front as a nice border. Just need to find something less dark to replace some of them conifers.
I think I'll clear out the two boxed areas in the back too, maybe a nice bird table in one with some bedded plants and ? in the other. (that lily is creepy). So many dark, dull shrubs to come out. I'm very grateful for your advice. guess i cant dislike it anymore than i do now. good job the house was nice
If you haven't already, perhaps give it time. I was lucky enough to inherit what turned out to be a cracking garden. I moved in a November so the first year was a voyage of discovery. As the year moved on a new plant would flower or pop up from the ground and it was great fun working out what they all were. Anyway, to get to my point. I started off hating Sedum. 18 months later I found myself planting more. If you give it a while, some might win you over.
Not a gardener's garden is it
You can soon liven that up

Hi Jesse2501
hope your plans for your new garden go well! We inherited japanese knotweed in our new garden 18 months ago but have it under control & almost gone! Maybe ask your neighbours if they want the plants you're thinking of ousting? Have had some nice cuttings etc from my new neighbours since moving in - gardening is a good ice breaker. best wishes
