They'll certainly struggle in pots, but the yellowing leaves of the one @carollangdon22FnbWxOW has, is likely to be stress induced because of that. Any tree or shrub which is potted can succumb if it doesn't have the desired conditions, and it's always harder in summer to keep them well enough hydrated.
    Definitely needs a better spot @stephentame  ;)

Not a plant I care for, or have ever wanted. There's one in a garden near me, and I always think it just looks ill when in leaf. Only look good in winter IMO.  :/
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

@Fairygirl :)  if I had a huge garden I'd grow one in a winter bed of witch hazel, Vib Bod etc and possibly multi-stemmed silver birch,  surrounded by snowdrops and spring bulbs .... and perhaps some native primroses as well ...........  it would be gorgeous for the few months when nothing else looks good ... and then, as it would be enclosed by a high yew hedge, I needn't look at it at other times of year.   ;)

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    I'd agree @Dovefromabove - always about the site.  :)
The one I see is slap bang in the middle of a narrow-ish border surrounding the grass,  right at the pavement, and very visible from the house. Not very bonny  ;)
