I prune(hack) mine down to about 3 ft in late winter. Basically you are coppicing it. You can repeat every three years or so. do not cut below the graft mark.
My daughter bought me one of these about 4 years ago and it is planted only 3 feet away from the house, it's shooting up rapidly and threw a straight stem this year which I have lopped right off at the bottom, I also prune it back annually. I'm also worried about the roots as it is so close to the house, should I dig it up and move it further away?
I planted two cobnuts in a space in the hedge with the idea that I'd "coppice" them into the general shape of the mixed hedge.
This year, they're threatening to be monsters. We have a healthy squirrel population so a lot of the cobs will be eaten but i'm not sure now that I want to have to contain the beast(s).
They came from a friend at work as seedlings who had them self seed in her garden (already an indication that they might romp away) so I'm having second thoughts before they get too large to dig out.
I'm trying to move one that's been in the ground 10 years, and was hoping you could advise me. for example how deep the root ball should be, its 6 feet tall I've never pruned it should I prune it. I've started digging today, but haven't got close to getting it free, and I'm scared of killing it.
I have one that’s been in the ground for almost 20 yrs. I love it in spring and hate it the rest of the year. The leaves are ugly and dark and when it drops it’s leaves they go into my small pond - sadly I planted it in wrong place - so have made the decision that today it is coming out and am going to put a beautiful acer in a large pot on its place.
I purchased a twisted hazel tree early spring , put it in a nice large pot, it has doubled in size, has plenty of twists and leaves , but I’ve recently noticed that some leaves are turning yellow , why is this and when should it flower . Thanks
It probably doesn't like being in the pot. It will always be happier in the ground. They flower in spring (catkins) and fruit (hazelnuts) in autumn. If there are squirrels in your area they will always get the nuts before they are ripe.

i now understand what to do with the straight suckers growing on my twisted hazel but now i am getting yellow leaves,
is this because of too much water or too little (she grows in a pot)

Anyone had cobnuts as hedging to help me decide?
The squirrels always get there first in my garden.
