My phormium seed pods were nothing like that. Havn't had any for two years because the frost murdered it. I'm waiting for the shoots off the rootstock to grow.
Daintiness.... Nothing remained just thick yellow stems I thought they were bamboo sticks at first but that was it then I noticed the seed pods ... I'm a sucker for a rescue plant this is my 3rd!!!!!
2 wheel I think you got it its a fritilliaria it looks right!!!! And the plants look about right as well. Even the description about the not all the seeds evening viable is right you clever thing hurray!! Now to research how to grow from seed....
It does look like frittilaria (Crown Imperial) but it also looks very like the tall yellow water iris - I have self-seeded (or bird dropped) ones well away from the pond. I usually cut them down when the seed heads are green, but they do dry like that.
I don't think it's phormium they have tall stems but pencil thick twisted seed pods. I think it is a wild iris ..flag iris..seed pod that's what they seem to resemble. Miare have stems 4 feet tall!

Stacey, if you look where the plant was cut down, what remains - cut off stems, sawn through leaves, trunks?

Back to the start Stacey. When you say one flower do you mean one pod like the one picture or several pods on the top of the stem
