I’ve several achillea in my garden - yellow, lilac & pink varieties but looking for a bright red one - any suggestions

    Red Velvet looks pretty good.

I have a reddish one, but I can't remember what it's called. It's not unlike the W. Funcke on Burncooses's site, with smaller gold centres.  :)

I grew A. W. Funcke last year.  It starts out a bright orangey red and fades to a beige, but pleasantly so, like many of them do!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

I’ve got Red Velvet and New Vintage Red. They are both very good and look very similar.

I think they all fade the reds can become more of a pinky red.
Dead heading does encourage more flowers but at the end of the season it is good to hold onto the old flowers into the winter months.

  • Thank you everyone! I’m gutted this site is closing btw. I’m a very keen amateur gardener & have had some really great advice from you on this forum so thank you all xxx

All achilleas fade, but it's just a case of planning where they are. Easy enough to move if needs be.  :)
Ballyrobert usually have a good selection too, and Claire Austin. Beth Chatto's site will likely be good too, as they're ideal plants for dry sites.

I simply can not grow an Achillea, I have tried many times. Is it my chalky soil perhaps?

I didn't think they were fussy @Meomye, but I certainly don't have chalky soil here, so I can't be sure.  :)

Hi @Fairygirl, I have just signed up with GC but I have to wait to be accepted. At what point can I add my avatar and is it easy? tia

Dunno - I joined a few years ago under a different name, but I didn't really post much. I think you have to wait until you've made a certain number of posts to do changes, but just ask one of the mods- they're very very helpful, and they've sorted out the countless queries they've already had  :)
