Weed identification help

Hello all,

We moved into our new flat last November which had a new lawn laid. This month, some weeds have sprung up in the grass and are covering alot of it. Google hasn't really identified it and worried it might be Japanese Knotweed. Google pics don't look exactly the same. Does anyone have any idea what this could be, fairly worried about this!

Could be jack by the hedge or garlic mustard.
Definitely nothing serious and definitely not Japanese knotweed.

It’s definitely not Japanese Knotweed so you can sleep easier in your bed. 😊

It looks to me a lot like Winter heliotrope https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petasites_pyrenaicus

    Definitely not Japanese knotweed.
Maybe Petasites fragrans...common name Winter heliotrope..can be an invasive thug.

Sorry Dove you beat me to it.

Hello and welcome to the forum @dilipchakraborti54632. How big are the leaves? They look very similar to Lesser Celandine leaves.

Don’t think those are Lesser Celandines … they’re the wrong texture … celandine leaves  are darker and glossy.  Also the leaves in the OP’s photo look to have little hairs on the stems just like petasites do … celandine leaf stems are hairless.
Also the leaves in the OP’s photo look way bigger than celandine leaves which are around the size of a 2p coin at the most.

    Winter Heliotrope

I agree - one of the Petasites.
We have an area of it beside a nearby burn, and it's been growing full tilt for a while, and covers the whole are there, so I'd guess it's the one @Dovefromabove and @Silver surfer have mentioned.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Leaves too large for celandine which are about an inch wide and glossy. Definitely not JKW.
  • I love this forum! Thanks for the reassurance. We have a flower which seems to identify it as winter heliotrope. Has anyone had this, have any advice about how to deal with it?

Pics below show Petasites fragrans....winter heliotrope...they were taken in South Wales in December.
    Flowers are pink
As to how you get rid of it I dread to think...I suspect Round up may be the only way.
    But I hate chemicals.
