OH works for a  company selling professional quality kitchenware including knives, cleavers etc both through their shops and online.  The regulations around reproof of age requiring proof of age are very strict, both in the shops and when knives are ordered online and delivered.

Would we really be happy for a situation to continue where knives can be ordered from anywhere in the world by a youngster with a debit card number or PayPal account and posted through a letterbox?

The other day OH asked for proof of age from a man who turned out to be in his thirties. He didn’t mind a bit. A colleague asked for proof of age from a young woman who said she didn’t have any ID but insisted that the fact that she had keys to a Porsche with her should be evidence that she was old enough to buy a knife!  Of course it wasn’t and she stormed off in a huff.

Given that a large majority of Royal Mail deliveries are made to houses where the inhabitants are not at home, expecting the posties to ascertain proof of age would seem to me to be impractical.

I'm wondering what happens when my knife gets posted back to me, assuming they can fix it. Technically they're not selling it and I already own it so do they still need to check it reaches an appropriate adult? Hopefully I'll find out in a few weeks.

I've bought a couple of knives from Amazon over the last year or so and have had to provide photo id on delivery.

For years Amazon also used to insist on photo id when delivering my alcohol-free beer.
Sensibly that doesn't happen any more.

I might order some more craft knife blades in the spring, just to see what happens. :D

I'm sure this will be very inconvenient for lots of us, but if it stops one more teenager being murdered, I think it is worth it.

I think it's worth it too, despite possible inconvenience (hence thinking ahead to order sharp items that I might want to replace soon-ish anyway).
The proof of age thing can clearly be worked around easily, even if retailers/delivery people apply it rigorously (even too rigorously sometimes - I was once asked for proof of age to receive a knife block that I'd ordered -  no knives in it, just the block).
I suppose if a youngster really wants a knife they'll just help themselves from their parents' kitchen or steal one from a shop, but every little step might help in a small way.

Have you seen how much drug dealing goes on using Royal Mail for delivery? I'm not sure the criminals are going to obey the new rules. :|
The list of banned things gets ever longer and the problems just keep getting worse. I'm a big fan of rules and regulations but I also like my freedom to self-govern. Ironically we can't discuss the root causes because of forum rules and regulations and the removal of our freedom to self-govern.
