Can't abide smell of white hyacinth - others are OK or paperwhite

I love the smell of white hyacinths but they affect OH’s chest so now I’ve got him I can’t have them indoors  :/

I used to love the smell of paper whites but they seem much stronger nowadays and I don’t like them any more … have they changed, or have I?

I was wondering if it was something about white flowers but then remembered Margaret Merrill  rose. Beautiful scent.
Someone somewhere mentioned the wonderful scent of gladioli. I've never smelt a thing off them.

@B3 Might the gladioli have been those pretty white ones with the maroon centre.
I have momentarily forgotten what they are called.
A delicate simple flower not the big brassy ones.

They were often sold in highstreet stores and supermarkets, very cheaply.... brain fade....grr

I tried those once. Poked them into a container and never saw them again.😐

My OH thinks paperwhites smell like something burning. He's quite specific that it's an electrical burning smell. To me they just smell sickly sweet/perfumy.

I have 3 types of scented shrubs in flower at the moment - winter flowering honeysuckle, a couple of different sarcococca and a couple of different viburnum bodnantenses.

One of these is blooming next door and the scent is enough to knock me off my feet. It's like John Lewis perfume counter.

You would really have to love the scent of whatever it is to have it in the garden. Subtle it is not. 10 metres off is enough for me.

I wonder if all the rain has made for a strong scent season. There have been theories put on the forum that it can be soil dryness than makes for loss of scent.
  • I already had a sarcococca in the garden which I hadn't noticed any scent on. The new one I bought last night is very strongly scented. Went out and put my nose right next to the old one (difficult because it's another recent purchase so still tiny), still nothing. They are different varieties and the new one (winter gem, old one is confusa) is better looking too with bigger shinier leaves and bigger flowers.
