Ha ha I did sow some too early and they died! I was going to do a few hardy perennials in Feb and then wait til May for the annuals. Your tips are much appreciated, especially the foxgloves, I’d have been so disappointed!
I would suggest some hardy Mediterranean plants with rounded forms (that seems to be one of your preferences) that combine very well with the cypress you have there. So, besides hardy lavender (such as the English lavender) other options could be lavender cotton (Santolina chamaecyparissus), Thymes such as Camphor thyme or Common thyme, Sages such as Common sage or Greek sage. If you like roses you may want to opt for a mounding rock rose which have lovely crumpled flowers, such as curled-leaf rockrose or Grey-leaf rockrose. All of these are hardy and drought tolerant, and can be considered a contemporary cottage style because they are quite colourful but can be trimmed to have a neat shape suited to more contemporary styles.
