BIG GARDEN BIRD WATCH 2024

"Due to popular demand, we have now run out of postal guides. You can still take part using our downloadable digital guide, which has everything you need to complete your Birdwatch."

Just a reminder if you want to take part 26th - 28th January.

I usually have their guide sent by post but it looks as though I am too late now. Not sure if I shall manage to do it online but will give it a go.

Is everything OK over at the RSPB? I know they've rejigged the website a bit because the bird guide section is awful now. It used to be great to show the kids but they've still got a lot of basic glitches to sort out.

Looking on their web site it would appear that quite a few people have had problems.

All parts of the Community should now be up and running following a closure a couple of weeks ago. This looks to me like a caching problem. Please try finding your web browser from the list of options here: http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache and when you have cleared your temporary internet files please return here: http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/placestovisit/lochgartenospreys/f/915.aspx let me know if you're still having problems.

Maybe that will help if you haven't already seen it.

I'm not sure what is going on. You can't use your RSPB account even as a member, so you have to register as a guest and then it keeps sending you on circular or dead end links to look for information. As long as I can record the sightings though it will be fine.

This is taken from the bird guide page. You can't dismiss the thumbnail that blocks the view of the bird's face and the page doesn't work very well if you rotate to landscape view. It used to be an excellent resource showing birds in all genders, age and plumage but they've changed it to mostly arty photos instead.

If it helps, the LPO (League pour la Protection des Oiseaux) is holding its count the same weekend and has these lists of birds, with pictures, to help identify -

I've found a printable guide that I can print out and post to you if you need it.

RSPB is very clued up; I think they'll get it sorted by next weekend.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

@wild edges  Hi, if it's something I can download on my laptop I can do that but otherwise I would be grateful if you were able to send me the copy.

Sorry @Fran IOM I totally forgot about this :# Things got a bit hectic last weekend as my dog got very ill and I had to take him to be put down.

Try this link to download the guide if you haven't already.

@wild edges sad to hear about your dog sending hugs 🥲

Can I ask a question re counting the birds, it may have been asked before so apologies if I’m repeating things.
I feed the birds and sometimes have so many on the feeders it’s one of those that’s a spike in the ground with 4 different food cages hanging on it.
Sometimes there’s so many birds on it I could never count them as they fly on and off so quickly! How do I record over an hour how many bluetits for instance, which appear to be the most common ones, they seem to arrive and depart so fast and crowd the feeder! Is is ok that I could be counting the same bird several times?
