Viburnum × bodnantense Charles Lamont - buds not opening

Hi everyone

I planted this viburnum bodnantense in February 2022, so it's still fairly young. It's on a west facing border that's pretty shady in winter, it's open to the sky

Over winter 2023, one year after planting, it had some flowers though not a huge number. This year it grew new, tall stems and seemed to be doing well, but despite being covered in buds not a single one has opened.

Is this just because it's young, or might there be something wrong?

@puschkinia All winter flowering Shrubs love winter sun.  V Charles Lamont AGM is one of them. If you just have a few flowers it could be the aspect that is the problem.
I would have thought west would be fine but are there buildings or something obscuring the light? Is it a hot spot in high summer in the evening or have you lost the sun by then?

@bédé yep, and a wonderful exercise in patience for me!

@GardenerSuze  Ah... oops. We have tall fences all around our small garden, so in winter almost all the garden is in shade all day. In summer it gets a nice amount of sun in the late afternoon/evening but not in winter. Might this lack of flowering happen every year :cold_sweat:?

@nutcutlet Oh I see, thanks for telling me. How do you tell flower from leaf buds?

Oh sorry I should add - @GardenerSuze, there isn't a single flower and hasn't been this whole season!

@puschkinia In my old garden I had one facing south 8ft tall flowered well for most of the winter.
My neighbour grew one in an east facing border limited morning sun. Flowering did vary but most years just a few flowers. I would expect this shrub to flower from only a young specimen.

@GardenerSuze Thanks so much for your help. I'll wait another season and reassess :)

My Vib. ‘Charles Lamont’  is in a west facing bed with buildings to the east and south of it, so only gets afternoon sun … it’s covered with flowers every year … I suspect that may be because it shares a good helping of clematis feed each spring with the Clem. cirr. ‘Freckles’ on the fence next to it.

It sounds as if yours is in a similar spot to mine … and I’ve grown them successfully  in shady spots in the past.

I would try patience and some clematis feed.

@puschkinia Yes well worth waiting it is a wonderful shrub for the winter months. I agree with @Dovefromabove some feed to encourage flowering is a good idea.
