Sanitising my veg patch after cat pooped in it

My cat has taken to using my veg patch as a dirt tray over the winter.  I covered it with netting but he climbed on the netting and pooped on that too!  The soil is about 12 inches deep in my veg patch and I would like some advice regarding how to treat the soil so that I can use it for growing veg again this year.  I have removed the poop but have yet to remove any soil.  Many thanks.  Simon

Just imagine the amount of animal life pooping in vegetable gardens and fields all over the world.

It's a natural function.  Just make sure that when you come to sow or plant you hoe the soil well beforehand.   If you, or anyone you are feeding from the veg patch, is likely to be pregnant then you need to wear gloves when planting and make sure the veg is well washed as some cats carry toxoplasmosis.

It's endemic and most people have had it in their lives - flu like sumptoms - with no bother but it can affect developing babies in the womb.  Despite having 5 cats, I had never had it so had a blood test every month of my pregnancy.

Normally this problem is caused by other people's cats. In this case you have the simple solution of just keeping your cat indoors. I wish the owner of the cat that craps in my veg beds would do the same.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Cats, more controversial than politics, maybe?

We have had cats for the last 30 years who used our Veg patch as a toilet. Never bother doing anything other than removing the evidence. We are still alive and kicking and no signs of toxoplasmosis.

  • Thank you everyone for your comments.  Reassuring and amusing!  Who knew cats could be so controversial  :D

Imagining all the cats that poo in vegetable gardens all over the world is pretty foul. Cats are a bane, yes.

@Palustris - you wouldn't know unless it came up in a blood test.   I eventually had a dose when Possum was about 10 years old but had no idea.  Just thought I'd had a bad cold.

It can also be caught from undercooked meat which is why it is more common in France and Belgium than the UK - all that steak tartare, rare steaks and pink lamb.
