finding a new spring for seceteurs

I have tried many replacement springs for these, but I have had no joy. As you can perhaps see, the gap, at full extent, is wide. If I put a long spring in the middle bends and drops - the tension doesn't hold. A shorter spring doesn't reach. The spring needs to compress fairly straight to coil properly.

The pair worked for years, until I lost the original spring in the undergrowth; so there is a way. I don't want to throw out the pair - I'm hoping just to find the right spring.  I can see no brand marking.

Clearly my logic is duff. Any ideas? Thanks

I'm wondering if you can look at different models of felcos to find one with a similar opening - I think felco springs are fairly easy to get hold of.
...and if you know the rough area, possibly trawl the undergrowth with a magnet (unless the spring is stainless)

One of the ones I have tried in a Felco 70mm - but no joy

Thanks. But I'm not sure what else to try. If I go longer the spring bends more. If I go shorter that doesn't seem to work either. I wonder if there is another kind of construction, perhaps

What is the measurement between the lugs? If we know that then maybe someone will have a similar size and can compare.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

It would be interesting to find out about the spring size. My secateurs have a maximum spread of between 4.5 to 5 cm when open. I don't know the make - they look very similar to yours, except my springs are more straight across.

Lots of secateur springs available on the big river site so have a browse.

I guess it is about finding the exact spring size. I will try others. Thanks

I was looking at sizing and there is also a mention of "bore"
Sorry no time to look it up, but it may be the reason for your problem of seemingly right size in length still not fitting.
So maybe "volute spring bore" might help your search.
    Good luck.

Edited to add a link. Note the image although hand written clearly shows length and bore sizes so it may be a consideration.

And note these lengths and bores different ones again.

I measured two pairs I have. Both open as wide as possible.
Measure from where the lugs are joined to the handles, not the tips of lugs, but the handle/base joint of the two .

    Mine happen to be 50mm.
The volute springs are both 60mm. So compress 10mm.

I think that is the correct /optimum/ standard for a correct fit.
So if yours happens to be 60mm wide you would need a 10mm larger  size spring.

One pair of mine came from Albert Victoria museum, a gift so no brand, and the other pair also no brand name, both look very similar to yours.
