While cutting down the Wild Geraniums yesterday, I saw that the Daffodils start to come out. Last week, I saw already these coming out, but what is their name? I actually never kept their name. It's another type of the Allium family I believe to remember. Can you help me?
They get around 1 meter high and the flower stem is a half a meter long and has got many flowers that start from the bottom and take around a months until the top is reached.

Thanks a lot.

  • Can’t see clearly how many ‘petals’ each flower has … looks a bit like Camassia which has 6 … but here it normally flowers in May/June … but perhaps the odd seasons have confused yours?

could you take a pic that shows the whole plant?

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • If it is Camassia it could be making the most of the wet conditions?

It would be very odd for a camassia to be flowering just now. It's completely the wrong time of year.
Perhaps it's been sitting dormant because the soil's never been moist enough for it to thrive. They won't do well unless the soil's consistently damp. Mine start to flower around May.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Excellent @Dovefromabove @GardenerSuze @nutcutlet and @Fairygirl
That’s the name I was looking for.
Of course the plant doesn’t flower now but the green starts.

  • Ah I understand. When you said they were ‘coming out’
i thought you meant they were flowering now … but you meant they’re appearing out of the ground … my mistake. 😊

That photo got us confused.🙄It's quite normal to have Camassia starting to appear now, along with many other bulbs (aliums, daffs, etc.).
  • @Papi Jo this is the only picture I have found. Yes, @Dovefromabove a real gardener observes every detail 😀

Interesting re the comments about new growth appearing at this time of year. The foliage/new growth doesn't do that. Around March, or perhaps late Feb at the earliest, with flowering starting in mid to late May and through June.
I'm going to look in the new year and see if there's signs of growth earlier than that though!   :)

  • Yes, @Fairygirl, they start coming out of the ground and you need to know that they are there otherwise you can break easily the early growth.
Eremurus / Foxtail, start late November.
Narcissus and Camassia start in December.

    Echinacea start in January.
