Plants growing out of the gutters

Hello All
There is a plant growing out of my gutters ie where the rain water pipe , kitchen sink pipe , washing mashing pipe and pipes from the bathroom enter. It also looks a bit damp at the wall area considering that it hasn't been raining.  Do you think this plant could be a sign of a bigger problem or should i just remove it and not worry ?

  • Those look like annual sow thistle type weeds and nothing to worry about. Just pull them out.

Their seeds float in the air and they grow wherever the land.

Remove the weeds, but I think you are really asking if there is a problem with a leaking pipe. If so, then call a plumber.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • There is soil at the base of the various pipes - weed/plant/tree seeds will land and grow there.  Pull them out whilst they are small.  Nothing unusual.

It's a bit strange to have soil around the pipes like that. Has your damp proof course been breached?

Every year I take the opportunity to remove the drain grating, and reach down into the depths to remove any gunge, mud and seeds (particularly sycamore seeds), to avoid growth of unwanted plants. It also helps to clear the run of water, to avoid flooding at a later stage.

Do not use rubber gloves - the water will just go inside!!  You might think this is obvious, but I made that error. Just once. And I'm supposed to be one of the intelligent ones!!

Ease the weeds out gently, trying to remove the entire root system.

You need some of these . I don't like to think too hard about what they're really meant for :s

I think, on looking more closely, that the big pipe on the left is leaking or there is a blockage, which won't do the house wall any good.

  • Certainly worth getting a reliable builder/plumber to check it out @Busy-Lizzie 😊

The big pipe on the left is direct from the toilet. If its leaking or blocked then that sounds concerning
