Chilly ... but beautifully sunny!

Perfect!  👍  After all the wet and windy stuff, it is a real treat to see horizon to horizon blue sky, with the autumn coloured leaves sunlit against it!

Me too but we really did need all the recent rain and the water table is still low around here.

I went to plant some bulbs after the first week of rain and the soil was still dry at bulb planting depth.   I suspect it'll be OK now tho I note that the lake in the village (2 forked valleys with dammed streams) is still not at full height.

Me too!  I should live in Switzerland really as dry, cold air suits me best.  Damp, I do not like.  Windy, I really do not like.  Humid heatwaves, I am flattened by.

@Obelixx, the river a short stroll from here usually has a dry bed till December and doesn't fill up till Feb/March.  Right now, it is 3/4 full and a raging torrent.  Unfortunately the council had not got round to strimming down the vegetation growing in it.  Too late now for this yr as it won't be empty again before June or July at the earliest.
  • It is a very pleasant change. The leaves are falling at a faster rate too.

  • I've done two green bins full so far. 🙂 Plenty more to go as most of the oak leaves don't detach till December.  Bumper crop of acorns this yr, which the squirrels have been busy burying all over the place!
  • I really enjoyed walking on the leaves - some crunchy, some not. I will put them on bare earth and then create leaf-litter from the rest.  You are lucky the squirrels aren't relying on 'hand-outs'! 😄

  • They get plenty of handouts from neighbours.  More bird feeding stations around here than vehicles in Gatwick's car parks!   I think this is not without issues for the health of the local wildlife, but there we are.  I limit myself to supplying fresh water and bathing facilities. 🙂

We've not had a lot of frosts yet, and just the lightweight ones at around zero or slightly below, but that's now becoming the norm unfortunately. What's horrible is the spells of overnight temps at 9 or 10. We'd be very happy if that was the daytime high at this time of year.
Our frosts usually start in early October, and we get a mix of everything from then onwards. A proper one last night at minus 4, and it looks like it'll stay bright all day. The expected high is 2. It's almost that now. [1.30pm]
Very few  trees with leaves left on them, other than a few here and there. That's quite late too. I love walking through them  :)

9C here at the mo @Fairygirl and no frosts yet.   Despite the recent gales many trees are still hanging on to their foliage, presumably because it's been so wet and warm that they don't need to shut down yet and may need the extra food they can photosynthesise.

Set to go down to -4C tonight tho so that may change things.

  • We have hovered at around 3 degrees today.  Lovely in the sunshine, but noticeably chillsome in the shade.

Just so nice to have a bright day after what seems like weeks of gloom and rain.   Very energising.
