I don’t understand why some people like to have a go at Monty. He’s one of the most genuine and decent people in the public eye.
It's certainly not a case of 'like to have a go at Monty' as the reason for making this post. It is entirely down to his confused and contradictory statements.
Monty can be as factually inaccurate as he likes I still like him I don't follow all of his advice to the letter anyway I'm not a sheep.
many novice gardeners tune into GW for accurate information. They don't have the experience, time or knowledge to automatically doubt , or cross check information .
They'll learn, not everything you hear on the telle is 100% kosher.
We will be waiting till doomsday for them to take a lead. It needs citizens and punters to push the agenda and govts to regulate.
Govs won't regulate. They are on the side of the wealthy shareholder. When citizens try to push the agenda, the big corporations pull dirty tricks to stop them ... and they have the resources to shut down literally anything.
Now, in some ways, AI may save the day, though humanity will be relegated from poll position. Presumably AI will not want possessions or wealth, food (apart from energy) or clean water. Their decisions may change the balance as humans take second place and cannot challenge their actions.
I don't have a problem with the more environmentally friendly message to garden that Monty tries to spread tbh, I think it is far better to move in this direction than to be 100% factual and publicise things that might do harm (no matter how small). GW is very much aimed at the new gardener imo, it covers exactly the same things every year and only has a few bits where anyone who has gardened a while will learn something. It's nice if people that are just starting out find a way to garden without chemicals or additives that we don't need.
I'm surprised though that people are taking what his says as if he is some sort of infallible expert, I've always seen him as more the type that offers his view, like talking to a neighbour, and you can make of it what you will. A lot of his advice isn't applicable here, like only watering pots once a week, so you just use your common sense. I would rather people in the public eye were a bit over the top when it comes to environment as it can give the ordinary public a kick up the arse to do a tiny bit more.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
