I keep my car keys in a small metal box (like a mini biscuit tin) that came from Home Bargains or some such place a few years ago, winter seasonal tat section (it's got snowflakes on it) for a few quid. It works fine, if I stand next to the car with the keys in the box and press the unlock button on the door handle, nothing doing. If I get in the car and then put the key in the tin, the ignition won't work.
On a related note, I had a momentary panic when I arrived home on Monday and found that the car key wasn't in the door pocket where I usually put it while I'm driving, nor in my coat pocket or bag. Turns out I'd left it in the boot with the shopping. I was surprised it started at that distance because sometimes it doesn't if the key's in my bag in the passenger side footwell.
