You need to have adequate drainage for them - mine are all in raised beds to counteract our weather and the sticky clay soil, and most are against the house walls where they get the most sun. They wouldn't manage terribly well even in the improved borders at ground level, although there's one or two which have spread there, especially where there's lots of other shrubs which create a drier area to enable better drainage for them.
This hasn't been an abnormally wet winter here - much the same as usual in terms of wet ground, and there's growth from them in the beds. You can always grow then in containers, but they'll need support, and they'll need divided every so often to prevent congestion. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on them - if you get the right conditions for them, a few will soon become dozens. I chuck out loads of small ones every year as they can take over those raised beds
