Smell

Hi, I hope that something could assist/ advise me.
We have a foul smell outside our flat, I have reported this to our factor who has come back and told us that sone shrubs cause a smell like raw sewerage. We have what I can only describe as a normal hedge outside. Has anyone ever come across this?

Hello - I know there are some plants with an offensive smell, either from leaves or flowers, though I haven't come across any myself.  Could you take a photo of your hedge and post it on here, so we can see if we can identify it?  You need to click on the "landscape" icon above the box you post in, and follow the instructions.  It's always possible the pong is nothing to do with the hedge, and your factor is pulling the wool over your eyes...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

The fruit on female ginko trees can absolutely pong. I'm not sure why the females plants are even available to buy. A cross between sewage and vomit.

    Could be Scotland @fidgetbones.
  • I notice a smell in my garden when local farmers are muckspreading, a good two miles away! It keeps making me think I have a drain problem.

Check for things around the property like hidden manhole covers and damp patches where it should be dry. Some times the sewage pipes near the property can overflow at the manhole covers or at the site of cracked pipes caused by blockages or partial blockages.

Animals like rats and urban foxes also have a particular pong which they leave behind but I would describe their smell like a musty, rancid oily smell similar to a person who hasn't washed their hair for a couple of months.

Other animal culprits could include cats and dogs which designate bushes as their personal toilets.

Viburnum can smell absolutely terrible. I lived in a place for a few years with a huge viburnum hedge outside my bedroom window and for a while I was convinced every dog and cat in the surrounding streets was coming into our tiny front garden to poo, but also hiding it really well. There's a huge viburnum down the street I live on now which is the same. They don't look damaged but I've read it's caused by beetles.

I've never since been able to bring myself to buy and plant any viburnum, just in case.
