The map already shows it as Sycamore stump. I hope they plant an Oak on the other side of the wall in line with it.

My guess is it’s a farmer’s boy who’s got fed up with townies walking all over the fields and maybe being rude as well.
I'm more inclined to suspect some kind of Tiktok challenge but there's no point in speculating.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • If only they had used that energy to do something constructive.

They've arrested a 16 yr old. Bet his name doesn't get publicised and all he gets is a slap on the wrist.

Well at least he didn't kill a child with a zombie knife, I suppose.Ā  Sycamores are fast growing and easy enough to replace.
I wasn't sure what a zombie knife was. I can buy one on Amazon if I want to have a good lookĀ

As an aside, it’s telling that we get so upset about one well-known tree being cut down while millions have been turned to chippings in the name of road and rail building without a voice being raised.
Ā People will still be walking that way as its part of the wall footpath, tree or no tree. It won't stop silly people and there will be an influx now.

Lots of people dislike any tree that gets chopped down so humans can " use the space better ", there are lots of examples where there has been uproar over trees being cut down, whether its on a local scale or a national one.Ā

This tree is more than just a simple tree to lots of people, its where memories have been made. To me as a sherwood forest local, if it had happened to the major oak i would have actually cried.Ā

  • Im gutted.
He must have done this before and cased the joint... so to speak.
You don't go out at the dead of night with a chainsaw, unless you know what you'reĀ  doing.
I can think of other lone iconic trees (lone tree Llyn Padarn) so I hope it doesn'tĀ  become a 'thing'.

  • This is heart-breaking. šŸ’”Ā  I often worry when I hear about 'tree of the year' and similar, because several of these trees have later been earmarked for felling by governmental authorities or have been taken out by persons unknown. Including those by the planned HS2 routes 😢Once trees become well-known, if they are not physically protected, they may become vulnerable.

Chappie on the news seemed hopeful that it could regrow - sycamore does have a strong will to survive and they said it was obviously very healthy (which they can see from the stump). So he may just have coppiced it

I'm looking forward to the official ring count if nothing else.
