I’ve just read this on the bbc,
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-66947040

I am so sad and angry that this beautiful tree has been destroyed. If it had come down in a storm that would be different but for someone to take a chain saw all the way there and chop it down is disgusting.Ā

RIP sycamore gap.Ā

  • I agree @SherwoodArrow ... I hope they find whoever it was and throw the book at them. Ā It is totally senseless, but there are some fanatics around who. consider them to be 'weed trees', 'invasive' and needing eradication because they're 'non native'. Ā I even came across someone who thought that way on this forum many years ago ... but I can't remember the context or thread ...Ā

With the exception of Scots Pine, most tree type in UK are "non native" .

They've probably changed the HS2 route to run through there. No tree is safe. I can only hope something positive comes out of this. The timber should be put to good use, a beautiful artwork erected in its place and a new native species tree planted to replace it.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Like someone in the article says even if they do find who did it, the tree is still lost.

They might non native and seed everywhere but they do make beautiful trees and how anyone could dislike one in this setting it beyond me.

It must have been photographed millions of times as well as appeared in tv and films. That picture in the article with the northern lights is lovely.Ā

What on earth is the matter with some people? I’m utterly shocked at this wanton vandalism. I hope whoever did this is found and brought to book. It really is a despicable act. Shame on them.

I can't begin to fathom why anyone would do that.

It beggars belief that a 16 year old has access to a chain sawĀ

  • Crazy vandalism.
I wonder if at the time the locals thought building a wall over their land was vandalism?Ā  :)
